When the Magic Is Not Working: Go Fly a Kite

You've hired some angels. You've launched a spell. You've made some sacred space. You've talked to the powers that be. In short, you've done everything in your power to bring magic to bear on something specific in your life ... and nothing is happening. What now?

Go fly a kite.

Or, if you don't like kites, take a hike. Ride a bike. Fish for pike. Sing into a mike. Stick your finger into a dike. Take a drive on the turnpike. OK, so maybe I'm getting carried away here (I'm often heavily influenced by the rhyming of spell chants), but you get the point.

Magical Delays
If the magic doesn't seem to be working for you, go do something else for a while. This might be counter-intuitive, but it really works. We get emails from students and strangers all the time, asking us what to do when the magic isn't working (or isn't working fast enough) and we often tell them to fly a kite.

Here's the thing. Magic always works. What delays the magic? Us. When we get worried, angry, depressed, and negative, the magic slows way down. As the teacher Abraham-Hicks is fond of saying, "You cannot have a happy ending to an unhappy journey." If you feel negative, then you're on an unhappy journey, and you can't have a happy magical ending.

The Prime Directive: A Giant Stop Sign
The reason magical beings can't deliver the result you want when you feel negative is because of the Prime Directive. Just like on Star Trek, the Prime Directive says that other beings can't interfere in your life. If you have asked for something magical to happen in your life, but then you doubt that it will happen, your intention rules supreme. Your doubt serves as a giant stop sign to angels and other helpers. They can't override your dominant intention of doubt.

But once your attention shifts into neutral, magical beings can once again deliver the magic into your life. You don't even have to be positive. You just have to not be negative. That's why flying a kite helps. It takes your mind off the "problem," which switches your attention to neutral. When you return from flying a kite, voila! Some magic will probably have taken place.

So do something, anything, to keep yourself busy while the magic happens. Stop getting in the way and the magic will appear. Do something "in the meantime." Your angels will thank you!

The Levels of Magical Knowledge

Most esoteric teachings divide knowledge into several different levels. It’s important to differentiate between these levels of knowledge since a magician or shaman must know what kind of knowledge is trustworthy and what is not.

In the ordinary world, almost anything can be categorized as knowledge, including what you read, what you hear from other people and what the experts tell you. Magically, true knowledge is quite different. Here are different levels:

IGNORANCE:
You do not know about the existence of something.

KNOWLEDGE OF: You have heard of the existence of something but don’t know anything about it.

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT: You have heard other people or sources talk about something. This is also commonly called hearsay.

KNOWLEDGE: You have directly observed or experienced something. Magicians and shamans consider this true knowledge.

KNOWING: Information you receive through your spirit senses which you may or may not be able to validate through your physical senses.

Most esoteric practitioners consider only knowledge and knowing to be trustworthy sources of information – everything else is open to question. Because magicians and shamans are the researchers of the metaphysical world, their job is to verify everything they read or hear about through actual observation and experience.

Why are these levels of knowledge important? Because when you’re traveling out of body or working with high level magical techniques that could have serious consequences you’d better be sure of your knowledge. The Universe judges you on what you do, not what you meant to do (based on faulty information).

In daily life if you choose to only put your faith in knowledge and knowing you will find that your life becomes much more harmonious. Why? Because most of our daily problems arise from trusting information that we only know of or know about. If you validate what you believe through actual experience and observation you won’t fall into the usual societal traps. Good luck!

How to Make Your Own Divination Rods

Divination rods are a great magical tool to add to your magical toolkit. Divination rods, also known as dowsing rods, can be used for divinations such as for finding lost objects, healing or to change the energy around circumstances and events. As a divination tool, these rods can help obtain information by psychic or magical means that is not readily available to the five senses of the body.

One type of divination rod is simple to make from household materials. This type is called an L-rod. The other popular type of dowsing or divination rods are a Y shaped wooden rod. You may be most familiar with these as being used to find water by people called water witches or dowsers. Below are the instructions on how to construct your own L-rods to use as divination rods.

Divination Rod Construction
To make your own L-rods, follow these simple steps:

1. Gather your materials: a coat hanger made completely of metal (no cardboard pieces), a drinking straw, a measuring tape, scissors and wire-cutting pliers.

2. Use the pliers to cut the curved top part of the hanger just below the twisted section of wire (this will require two bends).

3. Now measure the longest section of the metal piece and mark the halfway point.

4. Use your pliers to snip the hanger where you made your mark. Now you have two pieces of wire, each with a bend.

5. Reshape each piece of wire so that each wire has a 90 degree bend.

6. Take one of the metal pieces and measure both lengths of metal on either side of the curve. Snip both the short and long lengths so that the long length is three times as long as the short length. For instance, if the short length is 3" then the long length should be 9".

7. Do the same for the other rod.

8. Using the scissors, snip a piece from the drinking straw so that the straw is slightly shorter than the short side of the rod.

9. Slide the drinking straw over the short side of the rod, then use the pliers to bend the end of the rod so that the straw can't slide off. The straw allows you to hold the rod while allowing it to swing freely.

10. Repeat the process with the other rod.

Congratulations. You now have your own pair of homemade divination rods! The next step is to train your divination rods.

Training Your Dowsing Rods
Like all magical tools, for your divination rods to be most effective, you need to personalize and "train" them to work for you. The process is simple - much simpler than keying other magical tools like the Wand or the Athame.

To train your divination rods, take a regular sheet of white paper and draw a large X that takes up the entire page. Place the page in the center of an open area of you house.

Now step away from the paper and stand at least five feet away, facing the X. Hold one divination rod in each hand, angling your hands so that the rods point straight ahead of you.

While remaining standing still, command your divination rods: "Find the X!" Keep your mind focused on finding the X as you walk toward the X on the ground. Carefully keep your hands neutral and don't try to control the process. As you walk closer to the X, the ends of your rods should begin to move towards each other. They should cross each other as you walk over the X. As you walk away from the X, the rods should move away from each other again.

Don't worry if your rods don't "find" the X at first. Remember, this exercise is meant to help you train your divination rods. Just keep practicing this exercise, approaching the X from different angles until you see results.

Magic and Spells: How to Cast Spells for Bad Hair Days

Having a bad hair day? You know one of those days where it seems like nothing is going right, you don't feel in control of your life or your energy just feels "off". Magic and spells can help. Here are 5 simple spells and magical techniques for beginners that can help you get your day back on track.

#1 -  Magic and Spells: Disconnect Litany
This is a way to regain personal power and not bind yourself to any outside power that can affect how you feel. It allows you to disconnect from the stream of consciousness you have been in and step into another.
  • Pause to reflect on your situation, see a picture of what your day is like.
  • Keeping this picture in your mind say this litany aloud:
"I am neither your creature nor your get
to be ruled by your whim nor your let
I will go my own way
by night or by day
to serve my own purposes yet!"
#2 - Magic and Spells: Day Greeting
Starting off the day with a Day Greeting puts you in contact with Sky Father and Earth Mother (and winds of the 4 directions if you include them). It gives you access to the guidance of higher powers and beings. You can include asking these higher powers to be with you through out the day for help on a specific situation you know you will be facing or just to be with you in general for guidance and to share their wisdom. Whether or not you do Day Greetings as a daily ritual, you can always use day greetings to restart your day when it has gotten off to a bad start. Anytime you want to start your day or start it over, just go outside and do one of the following versions.
Simple Version -
  • Stand outside facing to the east,
  • Raise your arms and hands to towards the sky (making a V shape) and say "Sky Father, I bid you good morning"
  • Lower your arms and hands, maintaining the V shape, towards the ground and say "And Earth Mother, I bid you good morning".
Long Version –
  • Address all four of the directions by holding your arms out towards the direction you are facing
  • Start with facing East and say, "Winds of Knowledge (or Winds of the East), I bid you good morning"
  • Lower arms and turn to the South, raise arms and say, "Winds of Power (or Winds of the South), I bid you good morning"
  • Lower arms and turn to the West, raise arms and say "Winds of Feeling" (or Winds of the West), I bid you good morning"
  • Lower arms and turn to the North, raise arms and say "Winds of Strength" (or Winds of the North), I bid you good morning"
  • Lower arms and turn to the East again and do as above in simple version with Sky Father and Earth Mother
#3 -  Magic and Spells: Pendulum Spin
Literally spin your problems away with this simple pendulum technique. This is good for
clearing problems or snags in your day.
  • Hold your pendulum in your dominant hand, letting it dangle while you visualize the problem you want to clear.
  • Ask your pendulum, "Can I, May I, Should I, clear this situation?" If you get a yes answer from your pendulum, then move forward. You can use an indicator plate with a circle that has yes on one side and no on the other to get this answer.
  • Begin swinging your pendulum in a counter clockwise direction, asking it to clear the situation. As you do this, "see" the situation resolving in your mind. Be very specific with your request and what you envision as to the situation being resolved.
  • Continue to focus on clearing the situation until your pendulum stops spinning in the counter clockwise direction. It will then either start moving along a vertical or horizontal axis, stop or start spinning clockwise. When it stops swinging on its own then the problem has been cleared.
  • Once a problem has been cleared you can of course always choose to bring it back. Trust the power of your pendulum and your intent and release the problem from your consciousness. If you find it seeping back into your consciousness throughout the day, change your focus to something else.

#4 - Magic and Spells: Come Back to Present
We often spend time in either the past wondering how we could have done things differently or in the future worrying about things that haven't happened yet. The only time period that has any real power however is the present. Magic exists most strongly in the present and it is indeed the only period in which we have the personal power to make changes. (Remember the magical principle – a small change in the present can make a large change in the future). To get your day back on track, bring yourself back into being fully present in the present. Here's how.
  • Look at yourself in a mirror. Really stare into your eyes and connect with yourself.
  • In a strong voice of command, say to yourself: "Come to present time!"
  • You may have to repeat this command up to three times, and then you will feel yourself coming back into the "now." In the present, all things are possible.
#5 - Magic and Spells: Getting Higher Guidance
If you are really off track and your day seems chaotic or you feel chaotic inside, you can ask for help from higher powers to help you find inner and outer peace and serenity. Using similar actions to doing the Day Greetings above, turn to each of the four directions and/or Sky Father, Earth Mother and declare your wish for inner and outer peace and serenity today. Start in the east and address each direction by some characteristic it possesses, ie.- East: Winds of Knowledge. Take your time when doing this and extend your perceptions out as far as you can to each direction. Breathe deeply and feel the presence of these higher powers.

Bad days can always be made right through inviting magic into your life. Next time you find yourself having a "bad hair day" just pick one or more of these magical remedies to get yourself headed back to your joy.

What Winston Churchill Would Say About Magic - Never Give Up!

Never Give Up!
Winston Churchill was once asked to give a speech at a commencement ceremony at Eton. Many important people gave long speeches that day, and one person gave a 20 minute introduction for Churchill. All were hushed in anticipation of what Churchill might say.

Churchill stood up and gave a 9 word commencement speech: "Never give up. Never give up. Never, never, never." Then he sat down. Wow!

Winston Churchill's Words as Applied to Magic
Those 9 words epitomize the true spirit of the esoteric researcher. No one could have said it better. If Winston Churchill were to talk about magic, I bet that's what he would say.

The people who are able to really create magic in their lives and who are true explorers of the art and science of magic never give up. They are bold, persistent and completely dedicated to understanding the universal principles that make this Earth school tick.

Are You Just Trying to Solve a Problem?
You see, most people come into the study of magic or shamanism as a way to solve some immediate problem, whether it is prosperity, relationships, health, career, or success. Once they find some sort of solution to their immediate problem, they stop learning and growing in life - that is, until the next problem crops up. And, the next problem always will crop up. Why? Because they have not truly changed their understanding or consciousness about life or their birth vision.

That's what magical researchers do - they really try to understand, through their own observation and experience, how it all works. This study begins to fascinate them far more than whatever immediate problem drew them into magic in the first place. And that's when the magic really begins to happen.

When you get far more interested in the way this Universe works than in the particular problem at hand, you'll find that the problems in your life begin to shrink and disappear. That's the real magic of it.

Magical Research as the Real Cure for Life Problems
If you really want to "cure" or "fix" your life problems, pursue the study of magic to depths beyond anything you could imagine. If you never give up on magic, it will never give up on you. Learning and practicing this art as a way of life brings you closer to powerful, positive Universal forces. Really.

Ready to dig deep? Journey far? Plumb your magical depths? I have two words for you:

Basic Magic
