How to Make Magic with Everyday Magic

Magic is all around us and is there to help with all the everyday problems and annoyances we run into. You might be surprised to learn your house is actually full of magical ingredients and tools. That is what our Book 2 of the Witchcraft Spell Books series, Learn How To Do Witchcraft Rituals and Spells with Household Ingredients, is all about. This book gives you lots of magic techniques to help with everyday problems using common items that you will find around you. One of the techniques you'll discover is how to magically toss your troubles away.

How to Toss Your Troubles Away
This magic technique uses simulacra magic using rocks to represent problems or negative issues you are facing. In simulacra magic, an object is keyed to represent a person or thing and then whatever is done to the simulacra also happens to the person or thing it is keyed to. In this procedure you will be creating a psychic connection between a rock and a problem in your life and then throwing the rock in a body of water to toss it away. Here's how.

1. Pick a place to go for a walk that has some type of rocks or stones and has a large body of water such as a lake, pond or river and take a sack or bag with you.

2. As you begin walking look for rocks that call to you in some way and pick up one that draws your attention and that will be easy enough to put in your sack.

3. Hold the rock in your dominant hand, the hand that you naturally point with, and think of the problem that you want to key to this rock.

4. Key the rock by holding it in your dominant hand, and bringing up every thought, feeling, or physical sensation related to the problem or issue you have. Push all these with intention into the rock. Be sure that you are NOT keying the stone to a living person or being, but only the situation or problem that you are facing.

5. Once the stone gets an energetically heavy feeling to it, becomes warm or tingly, you will know it is keyed and can place it in your sack.

6. Continue on your walk doing the same with other rocks and other problems until you feel you have a rock for each of the problems or issues you want to deal with.

7. Now take your sack of rocks to the body of water and take one stone out of the sack. Hold the stone for a few seconds then toss it with all your might into the water. This physical disconnection will sever the issue from your life.

8. You can also say the following disconnect litany in a voice of command just before throwing the rock into the water if you wish.
"I am neither your creature nor your get,
To be moved by your whim or your let;
I will go my own way,
By night or by day,
To serve my own purposes yet."

9. Continue throwing the rocks in this way one by one into the water and once your sack is empty you are done.

This will disconnect you from the problems that you opted to deal with. You can of course always choose to bring them back into your space, so just know that you have let them go and dwell on them no more. Find a way to distract yourself if you find that you are starting to wonder about them again.

Is Someone Else Making You Ill? Magical Self Defense

If you find yourself chronically ill and are starting to suspect that the source of your illness is coming from someone else then it may be time to employ a little magical self defense. It could be that someone is either stressing you out to the point that illness is the result or it could be that another magical practitioner has done a magical procedure to cause you to be ill. The first step to take is to get the information you need to find out who is responsible. You may already know that your boss or spouse is stressing you out with too many demands on your time. There may however be other sources of stress that you haven't considered. In the case of magic being used against you, you may or may not know who is responsible. Getting information from the Universe can help you determine the source of your illness so you can decide which form of magical self defense will be best for you to use.

Finding Out If Someone Is Making You Ill
There are techniques you can use to find out if someone else is involved with your illness. As a planetary citizen you have a right to any and all information in the Universe. There are many ways of gathering the information you need or want and you will find specific directions for some of these techniques in our Daily Rituals for Attracting What You Want in Life ebook. Using magic to gain the knowledge you seek can be accomplished through one or many different techniques. You can use magic rituals to consult spirit guides, higher powers and beings, get information from your own Spirit, use divination such as with the pendulum or Tarot, use a Question Circle or just ask the Universe in general to get the information you seek. Here are the directions for one of the magical techniques that involves consulting the totem spirit of Owl.

Asking Owl
The owl totem is a good one to work with in getting answers from the Universe since Owl medicine is associated with clairvoyance, astral projection and magic. Owl sits in the east which is the place of illumination and can see things that others cannot.

Here are the steps to follow in working with Owl to get information:
1. Say aloud or in your mind, "Spirit of Owl, I request your help."
2. Wait a few moments until you feel the presence of Owl (no more than a few seconds).
3. State your request. For instance, if you want to know if someone else is responsible for your ongoing illness, you might say, "Owl, please come with me today and show me who is causing the ongoing illness that I am experiencing. Please show me in a way that I can clearly understand. Thank you in advance for your help." Appreciation is very important to this process.
4. Keep an open mind to what Owl will show you. Owl will ride with you on your shoulder, whispering in your ear, giving you knowing and understanding where before you had only blindness and confusion. Owl may bring up old memories, send you a phrase from the mouth of a stranger or bring a chance meeting with another person. Owl will use any and every device to help you see.
5. If at the end of the stated period of time, which in this example would be today, you still don't understand what Owl is showing you, ask again the next day. Each day Owl will make it more obvious to you. Each time you gain a new insight or understanding, thank Owl for the help. Remember that Owl penetrates secrets and veils, and can show you anything you wish to know. All you have to do is ask!

I Have the Information... Now What?
If a sudden unexpected illness crops up or becomes an ongoing illness that you just can't shake and sources have told you that you are under attack, then one form of magical self defense you can easily take is to create some sacred space for yourself. Creating sacred space is a very simple way to get back peace, serenity, clarity and get your energies in balance. There are hundreds of ways to create sacred space, depending on which tradition you study or practice. One of the keys though is consistency. Doing a simple daily ritual consistently will bring you much more success in creating sacred space than doing a list of things that you will probably put aside when stressed and short of time. You can pick a ritual as simple as sitting in total silence just breathing for 3 minutes each morning. As long as you do it consistently each and every day, you will build force and feel the results throughout the day. Building force, taking back your personal power, de-stressing and realigning your energies may be enough to heal your physical ailment. If not, then you may need to also use some type of magical shielding to protect yourself. This could be in the form of a talisman or amulet or through a magical shield such as an omnil.

Anytime you need help from the Universe, all you have to do is ask. You can co-create your own reality with the Universe's help and a little bit of magical knowledge.

Relationship Magic: Are You An Air Personality?

Relationship magic? Really, what does magic have to do with your relationships? Knowing which of the 4 elements is most predominant in your personality can actually help you in several ways with relationship issues. First of all having an understanding of the characteristics in your predominant element gives you insight into your own personality. This knowledge can lead you to choosing a career and relationships that you will be successful in. If you know what element your personality is, then you can balance with other elements when needing to interact with a person of an incompatible element or to accommodate for certain situations. The Air Element
How does this all work? First you need to have a basic understanding of the characteristics of each of the 4 elements: Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. If you are an Air personality you are a good communicator, planner, speaker and thinker. You are quick to come up with ideas, solutions and inspiration. You respond to ideas and visions, are great teachers and mediators who are able to easily absorb and translate large amounts of data. Personalities dominant in the Air element usually have excellent memories, but are also easily distracted by different ideas and are apt to change beliefs, opinions and ideas quite often. It is often a challenge for Air personalities to complete projects and tasks because of the distraction factor and because they prefer change and novelty to stability and practicality.

The Road to Success With an Air Element Personality
Air people will do well to find life roles that give them variety and frequent changes in scenery. Careers that involve communication with all types of people, that involve creativity and capitalize on the ability to see the big picture work well for them. Relationship Magic: Communicating with Someone Based on Elemental Personality Type

If you have been following our series on relationship magic, then you've read how relationship magic is a helpful tool in discovering your own personality traits and those of others in terms of which of the 4 elements most makes up your personality. This information can help you pick a career and relationships that you will be successful in. Here is a quick summary of the basic 4 elemental personality types and some of the characteristics they display.

Air Personality
If your personality is predominantly Air, then you have good communication skills, are adept at planning and are a good mediator. You also are a thinker who is quick to come up with ideas, solutions and inspirations. Your memory is excellent, but you are also easily distracted by various ideas and change your beliefs, opinions and ideas often. Completing projects and tasks is a challenge for you due to being easily distracted and because you like novelty and change rather than stability and practicality.

Fire Personality
If your personality is predominantly Fire, you have a lot of energy and enthusiasm for life. You are achievement oriented and action based. You are probably a natural leader, are creative and easily excited. You may be into thrill seeking through activities such as extreme sports and like to live life in the fast lane. You are easily frustrated by things moving along too slowly and become impatient or irritable with others who are not action oriented or just moving too slowly for you.

Water Personality
People with predominantly Water personalities are empathetic and compassionate people. They are the people others go to for comfort, love or assurance. They are usually caretakers of other people, animals and the planet and often are empaths, psychic and healers. These type of personalities value integrity and harmony and strive to create balance. They are aware of the beauty and gifts in their lives and appreciative of them. The challenge for these people is to not get so involved in other people's problems and emotions that they take them on themselves along with the negative energies. Instead of trying to fix everyone and their problems, they would do better to realize that modeling appreciation, joy and gratitude which comes natural for them is a better way to serve.

Earth Personality
Those people that have predominantly Earth personalities are practical and pragmatic. They are patient, stable, strong in character and persistent. These type of people value loyalty, structure, permanence and boundaries. These usually serene people are good at building strong foundations, finding out how things work, and manifesting. They are not risk takers and can be stubborn, inflexible and slow to make decisions. Collecting too many material possessions is often a downside of this personality type as is getting stuck in a rut.

Relationship Magic: Communication
Once you know your personality type and the personality type of someone you have a relationship with, you can plan ways to "get along with" the other person or possibly know personality types that you should avoid having close relationships with. Let's look at an example and see how this might work.

Leah and Karen work together in an office situation and have jobs that are on equal footing. Leah is an Earth personality and Karen is a Fire personality. They often butt heads due to Leah's tendency to mull things over and take her time before making a decision and Karen's tendency to want things to move quickly. Karen is easily frustrated by her job to begin with because it doesn't always stimulate her need for expressing her passion and creativity and her Fire personality causes her to often want to act before thinking. Leah frustrates her further by wanting to think things through very thoroughly before acting. You can see the problems these two personality types have getting along when they are in a situation that requires them to work together and make joint decisions.

There are a few different ways that Leah and Karen could learn to have better communication that would leave both feeling less frustrated. If they were each aware of their own personality type and each other's type, then they could suggest a division of work that would play to their own strengths. For example for a given problem, Karen could gather data quickly, come up with creative solutions and make her decision on a recommended solution. She could then turn all her work over to Leah to mull over and make a decision. If they do not agree on the solution, then they will need to interact and have communication about it. Being aware of each other's elemental personality, Karen would know that using a slow, deep voice could insure that Leah will be more receptive to what she is saying. Leah would be aware of her tendency to be inflexible and make the extra effort to really listen to Karen, possibly taking her idea and adding a bit of structure to it.

These two personality types at first glance seem like such opposites, but if you really consider each of their strengths, you may find that they could actually complement each other very well in this type situation. Giving Karen tasks that need to be done quickly, that allow her to use creativity and passion and assigning Leah more of the paperwork, computer tasks, and tasks that do not have to have quick decisions but do require organization would work well. So for example if these two women worked in the advertising business, Leah could do in depth research on a product or a new client and then turn this information over to Karen for her to develop some creative campaigns. Leah could then take the campaign and add some solid, practical suggestions. Karen would then do well with creating slides for the presentation while Leah could begin scripting the presentation. According to the personality type of the client, they would decide who would be most compatible with that personality type and the best to do the actual presentation of the campaign.

No matter which personality type or mixture of types you are dealing with, being aware of the strengths and weaknesses can help you use relationship magic to solve most relationship issues. You can get more information about the 4 elements in our four element short courses (email info@shamanschool.com to ask about our current free offer on these classes) and take our Four Element Personality Test to find out your elemental type. Then like with any magical procedure think it through and you can find ways to get the most out of your relationships magically.

Job Stress? Afraid You Won't Make it Until Retirement? No Problem... You Just Need a Little Voodoo

Can voodoo magic really give your career a boost? Yes. Voodoo magic is a form of magic that first came from Africa. Voodoo is actually a West African religion that involves circle rituals, dancing, singing, drumming, ancestor worship and yes, the voodoo doll. A voodoo doll is nothing more than a simulacrum. A simulacrum is an object that is a likeness of something or someone else. Therefore after you take a voodoo doll or other object and key it to a person or thing, whatever you do to the doll or simulacrum affects that person or thing. A simulacrum could also be a photograph, picture, figurine, symbol or Tarot cards, anything that will capture the "essence" of what or who it is you want to have an effect on.

Keying a Simulacrum
This works by making a psychic connection between the person or thing and the simulacrum. We also call this "keying" the simulacrum. According to the Law of Similarity, the greater the likeness between a simulacrum and what the simulacrum is keyed to, the greater the psychic connection will be. To key a simulacrum hold it in your dominant or "output' hand and think of everything you know about the person or thing. Continue this until it feels charged, warm, heavy or tingly or some describe it as a feeling that the simulacrum is "alive" or they felt it wiggle.

After the simulacrum is keyed, you must be very careful with it. Whatever happens to it will happen to the person or thing it is keyed to. When you have finished whatever magical procedures you want to do to the simulacrum and are ready to "unkey" it, you cut the psychic connection lines with a keyed athame (fire element tool) and throw a blast of electric blue energy at it from your athame. Some Wiccan practitioners also will bury the simulacrum in the earth for a moon cycle to complete the "unkeying" process.

A Little Voodoo for a Career Boost
Be sure that you have thought through any magical operation you attempt using on a voodoo doll or simulacrum and as always, that you are following the Rules of the Road (Universal Laws governing magical practice) to avoid any karmic backlash. A voodoo doll and other types of simulacra can be extremely useful tools for a wide variety of magical healing, protection, and communication if used appropriately.

An example of how you might give your career a boost using a simulacrum is to key a plant to your current job situation. Then take very good care of that keyed plant. As the plant grows and blooms, so will your career. Another approach might be to make a list of everything that keeps you from being happy at your current job and take something like a rock to key each item on your list to. You don't want to include people on your list, but rather connect the rocks to your resentments, fears, angers, and other negative emotions. Then you can throw the rocks into a lake or bury the rocks and allow Mother Earth to cleanse them for you (leave them buried for at least one moon cycle). If you really have a good job, but just have a few things that make it stressful or keep you dissatisfied with it, then this is a great way to unload.

Voodoo or simulacrum magic allows you to attract things you want, get rid of things you don't want, do long distance healing and communication, set up magical protection and many more magical things. If you want to learn more about this type of magic, check out our How To Do Voodoo ebook.

Invest in Magical Treasure

Magical treasure often inspires visions of a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow or a pirate chest of jewels and silver, but we'd like to offer you another way to think about magical treasure. Some spiritual traditions define treasure as "small things that are uniquely pleasing and satisfying to you, and you alone." This makes magical treasure a very individual thing as it varies from person to person. What one person might consider pleasing and satisfying, another person will not.

Some Types of Magical Treasure
Some examples of magical treasure might include:

Activities – hiking, building models, involvement in a book club, having grandchildren visit for the summer, ...

Pampering – taking time and spending money to have manicure/pedicure, visit a spa, relaxing in a nice hotel and ordering room service, ...

Items – new shoes, four-wheeler, fishing equipment, woodworking tools, ...

Companion animals – spending time with dog or cat, riding your horse, ...

You may have noticed that none of these examples is necessary in order to live your life. If you did not have these treasures, your life would continue on in its normal fashion. Your treasure does however bring you great inner satisfaction each time you interact with it or even think about or see it. For example, if you had a professional manicure you have the inner satisfaction that occurred when you had it done which then continues every time you look at your hands. This small continuing inner satisfaction is the gift that treasure brings to you.

How Investing in Magical Treasure Pays-Off
There is usually some type of money required for these treasures that is a noticeable amount, but not so much that it is stressful. So how does this investment pay-off? When you experience feelings of pleasure and satisfaction you are aligning yourself with the Universe and inviting it into your life. You put yourself in a place of allowing the Universe to help you with life. Here's a real life example of how this works with one of my treasures. I spend $5.00 each workday morning at a coffee shop for coffee and a danish before going to work. This treasure ends up costing around $100 to $125 a month. I enjoy not only the excellent coffee and Danish, but also the energy of being around the types of people I encounter there. Enjoyment of this treasure leads me to being more productive when I get to work so that I am able to increase my earnings. So whereas I may invest $100 a month on my treasure, I reap the benefits in producing work that leads to several hundred dollars profit. In addition, the pleasure this small treasure gives me puts me in a place that I am aligned with the Universe and open to receiving the gifts and benefits it can offer me.

Finding Your Treasure
As we mentioned before, this type of treasure is also very individual. What you may consider treasure, another may consider frivolous or even unpleasant. When it comes to magical treasure though it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks. It is only important for you to discover what your treasure is. Knowing your own magical treasures gives you a way to approach life from an attitude of using small ways and means to bring you consistent satisfaction. Take some time to consider what things really do give you that inner glow or inner feeling of satisfaction. You may need to experiment with some things that you find enjoyable and really tune in to your inner state to judge if they are truly a treasure for you or not.

Once you find your magical treasure, make the commitment to consistently indulge yourself with it. If it is an expensive treasure, then you do need to take your financial situation into account and be reasonable about how often you can indulge so that you assure success in being continually satisfied with it. Doing something now that you will end up regretting in the future will not be helpful. But even something that seems a bit over-budget and over-indulgent can pay-off because indulgence that brings satisfaction is the goal behind treasure. Positioning yourself to be in alignment with the Universe will magically transform your life, so investing in the treasure that will keep you there is an investment that magically pays back.

Sudden Health Crisis? Don't Panic! There is Always a Magical Solution

There are so many different categories of magical techniques that no matter what health crisis you are facing, there is always a magical solution you can employ. Energy healing is one category of magical techniques that can be a magical solution for healing yourself or others. Basically energy healing involves a variety of techniques that bring a person's energetic state back into balance. Our Energy Healing For Self and Others ebook starts off presenting some of the basic principles underlying magical healing work. These principles are:

1. Anything Can Be Healed – There is always hope and no matter how severe a condition is, healing is always a possibility.

2. Anybody Can Heal – It is a natural and intended process for human beings to heal. Most people don't do healing work because they have not learned how to access their natural healing abilities.

3. Energy Healing – Since everything in the Universe is made up of energy, healing work is all about working with energy. Everything is composed of energy which is constantly moving or in a state of vibration and everything has its own unique electro-magnetic field. When energy becomes disharmonious or is out of balance the result is often illness, pain and disease. A person or animal with an illness has basically moved into an energy state that is not a match for their natural vibrational state. Through magical healing, the vibrational state is adjusted and brought back into balance.

4. Letting Go – Most diseases and illness are brought about by some issue, hurt or past (possibly past life) situation that a person has not been able to "let go" of. Energy healing can help release the emotion that is attracting the condition so that spontaneous healing from the body's own intelligence can occur.

5. You Don't Lose Healing Knowledge – The knowledge you gain in one lifetime carries over to your next lifetime. You don't lose that knowledge no matter how many lifetimes you transition into. This is why some people seem to be naturals at doing magical healing work. They have simply spent more than one lifetime already studying healing. So even if you are struggling to learn magical healing techniques in this lifetime, don't worry, you will be even better prepared in your next.

6. Evolution of Healing – Our race is always learning and evolving and therefore the illnesses and diseases we have do too. For example, in the past smallpox and the plague were the focus for healing work and today healing work is needed more for heart disease, AIDS and cancers. For this reason, healers must also continue to learn, grow through expansion of their understanding and sensitivity and evolve through their own spiritual growth.

If these principles have intrigued you or resonated with you in any way, then maybe Spirit is telling you that you are ready to start exercising your innate healing abilities. You really can heal your life on a variety of levels with magical solutions. Our Energy Healing ebook can help get you started on your path towards magical healing.

All the Magical Basics in a Single Book

Want to really get started with your magical practice this year with all the basic principles and basic rituals? Check out this ebook on Kindle or in paperback. To whet your magical appetite, some of the magic topics and techniques you'll find in this book include:

  • Using a Book of Shadows
  • Contact rituals to connect with higher beings
  • Scrying
  • Sending psychic messages
  • Walking meditations
  • Magical weather working
  • Relocating unwanted spirits
  • Grounding and clearing negative energies
  • Preventing nightmares
  • Healing and blessing rituals
  • and lots more

Just to whet your appetite a bit more and show you what a valuable magical resource this book can be, here is one of the simple rituals you'll find there.

Grounding Out Negative Energies with Grandmother's Tear
Grandmother's Tear or Apache Tear is a type of obsidian which is volcanic black glass made from feldspar, hornblend, biotite, and quartz. These stones are great for grounding out excess or negative energies such as anger, frustration, pain, or irritation. By using Grandmother's Tear to absorb these types of energies you transfer these unwanted energies into the half worlds. The stone itself does not hold the energies so it doesn't have to be cleaned regularly like many crystals do. It is simply a conduit or portal for transferring these energies into the half worlds. This means you can carry one of these stones with you and use it as many times as you need to throughout the day. Here's how you flow negative energy into it.

1. Obtain an Apache Tear or Grandmother's Tear stone from a rock and mineral store or gem store or from an online source.

2. Decide for you which is your dominant hand. You do this by naturally pointing at something and whichever hand you point with is considered your dominant hand.

3. Hold the stone in your dominant hand.

4. Using your intention, flow or push out the unwanted energies that you want to be rid of. Get in touch with the feelings and physical sensations around it and feel yourself pushing these out of your body and into the stone.

5. Be aware of how you feel and once you reach a place of peace or calmness, stop flowing energy into the stone. You may also feel the stone being warm, tingly or heavy at this point.

6. Sit for a few moments simply breathing, being relaxed and enjoy the sense of peace you have.

This is just one of the great magical treasures awaiting you in The Complete Guide of Witchcraft Rituals & Spells for Beginners to start you on your magical journey and inviting magic into your life.

Take a Long Moment to Change Your Life Magically

One of the many tools available to shamans is the manipulation of time. A shaman is skilled in being able to go forward or backwards in time to add to their research or for healing purposes. For example, a shaman my need to go back to a past life event to help someone understand what happened in that past life that is contributing to an issue the person is experiencing in this lifetime. You, too can start learning to manipulate time magically by experimenting with the "long moment".

What is the Long Moment?
The long moment is an art which utilizes the ability to slow one's perception of certain events in order to see what really is happening in present time. Another name for this long moment is the Cortothalamic Pause. This is a useful tool to slow life down and be able to form an appropriate response instead of giving a mechanical response or more likely reaction to a situation. For most people there is a 3 step process they go through that leads to responding to events and situations with a mechanical reaction. They are:

1. We receive an incoming perception: ie. - A person speaks loudly to us
2. The perception is immediately routed by our flow of associations to a certain place in our memory: ie. - In this or a past life, we have memories of loud voices and anger.
3. The perception is assigned a meaning: ie. - The person is angry with us.

These steps happen very quickly, less than a second usually and lead to a reaction of however each of us responds to an angry person. We don't take the time usually to consider that there may be other feelings involved and that we are assigning our own interpretation to another's actions. This leads often to overreactions at the moment and causes more problems. If you had a Cortothalamic Pause, you would not react out of your own memory, but rather be able to slow the event down, be totally present in the "now", and form a more appropriate response.

The Magic of the Cortothalamic Pause
Using the Cortothalamic Pause to slow yourself at the moment you receive an incoming piece of data allows you to stretch time. In this long moment you give yourself the power to evaluate the information you have received and give a true response. You may think this sounds difficult, but all it really takes to master this art is practice. Start out twice a day practicing this skill. When someone asks you a question or asks you to do something, stop everything inside yourself for 2 seconds. Stop all thought and consideration. Get quiet. Then respond to the person. For a while you won't actually be able to stop your internal thoughts, but you will be able to see all the mechanical reactions and thoughts that immediately spring up. You may be surprised at the massive and often chaotic activity that happens inside yourself. It will give you true insight into the way you interact with life.

Flower Essences To Help with the Cortothalamic Pause
You can increase the likelihood of being able to take a Cortothalamic Pause by using these flower essences daily:

  • Lavender and Chamomile for calming
  • White Chestnut for reducing repetitive thoughts
  • Thyme for helping to manipulate Time

To learn more about flower essence remedies and other techniques for self-healing and self-exploration, see our ebook Energy Healing for Self and Others.

Magic That Works: How to Study Magic

When people first discover magic it can often be confusing in terms of which magical path is the right one for them and how to study magic. Many are often skeptical and want to know if there is really magic that works and what can it do for them. It's good to be skeptical and to do some exploring into different traditions to see which resonates with you. You're probably familiar with the saying that when the student is ready the teacher will appear. That is very true when it comes to how to study magic and finding magic that works for you. To help you decide if the type of magical studies we offer at the Esoteric School are right for you, we have a section on How To Study Magic as well as plenty of free resources to let you explore our magic that works. Here are a few suggestions on things to do when deciding how to study magic.

What Is Magic?
Before we begin the actual hands-on study of magic, we believe it is important for people to understand what magic that works really is and what it can do for you. Magic is a precision science, the science of deliberate creation, a system of creation and study of intention. Every intentional act is an act of magic. Magic allows us to communicate with higher powers and beings and co-create with the Universe. It is also a path of spiritual growth. The practice of magic is governed under Universal Laws and a set of ethics that need to be adhered to for a safe and effective magical practice. We call these The Rules of the Road. When beginning on a magical path, students need to understand these rules and the implications they can have.

How To Study Magic: Start With the 4 Elements
We believe in starting the actual study of magic with learning the fundamentals of the 4 elements – Air, Fire, Water, and Earth. Everything in the Universe is made up of these 4 elements. The safest element to begin practice with is Air. The Air element corresponds to anything having to do with seeing, breathing, speaking, hearing, planning, thinking, believing, memorizing, communicating, learning, teaching, information, ideas, wisdom, understanding, worry, sensation, awareness, opinions, data, memory, mind. Once you learn the characteristics and correspondences that are associated with the Air Element and how to handle and flow this element, you can move on to the other elements.

How To Study Magic: Learn To Use Magical Tools
Once you have a good working knowledge of all of the elements you can then move on to learning how to study magic with the use of magical tools. The Air element tool is the Wand. We encourage students to make their own wands rather than buy one and you can see how to do that HERE. Magical tools associated with the other elements are the Fire tool – the athame, the Water tool – the chalice and the Earth tool – the plate or pentacle. Some of the other magical tools you may find useful include the pendulum, Tarot deck, the firebowl, the black mirror, candles, sun crystal and simulacra. Each of these can be used for various techniques such as healing, exploring other realms, divination, psychic communication, finding lost objects, gathering information and spellwork.

Now that you have some information on what magic is and how to study magic, time to get started. Take a look at our How To Study Magic section on our website and explore all our free resources to see what magical offerings peak your interest. Magic that works is your birthright as a planetary citizen, so exercise your right to a fulfilling magical life!

Voodoo Dolls: How Do They Work?

There is much that you can do with Voodoo magic, but what most people associate with it are voodoo dolls. Yes, voodoo dolls are real, not just something made up in fictional stories. The practice of Voodoo is much more than just using voodoo dolls. It also involves circle rituals, dancing, singing, drumming and ancestor worship, but since the use of voodoo dolls are the most familiar, let's start there and see how they work.

What Is a Voodoo Doll?
A voodoo doll is simply a simulacrum. A simulacrum is an object that is the likeness of something. So the voodoo doll is a likeness of a person and is used to represent that person. Once a psychic connection is made between the voodoo doll and that person, whatever you do to the doll affects the person. This is useful when you want to perform a magical operation on someone who is far away from you. Making the psychic connection between the voodoo doll and the person is also called "keying" the doll. This is basically done by holding the voodoo doll in your dominant hand and flowing energy into it by thinking of all you know about the person. This is a simplified explanation of the process involved and more information is available in our How to Do Voodoo ebook if this is something you are interested in pursuing. This type of magic is also referred to as simulacra magic and the ebook goes into much more depth as to the uses and techniques of this fascinating branch of magical study.

How Voodoo Dolls Work
Once the voodoo doll is keyed, it is connected to the person. The Law of Similarity tells us that the greater a likeness of a simulacrum is the greater the psychic connection will be. For this reason many magical practitioners use actual photos of a person instead of a voodoo doll. Others get more creative and create a doll so that they have an entire body and use a picture face of the person in the doll. The more the voodoo doll resembles the person it is being keyed to, the greater the connection will be between the doll and the actual person. Now whatever magical operation you use on the doll will benefit the person it is keyed to. So for example, one of our advanced students recently took on a project of ridding a friend that lived 800 miles away from her of a long-time scar. Using the voodoo doll she created of her friend and keyed to the friend, she was able to use her athame with various beams of fire colors, sweeping and pulling methods to reduce the scar. That is just one example of the many, many magical things that can be done with a voodoo doll. Pretty much any magical operation that can be performed on a person can be performed on the voodoo doll instead with the results affecting the person keyed to the doll.

Rules of the Road
Usually when voodoo dolls are portrayed in works of fiction, it is to harm someone else or bind them in some way such as falling in love with you. This is not the intended safe use of a voodoo doll however. Remember the Universal Laws that govern magical practice and only use the voodoo doll in ways that are in accordance with these rules. Using magical practice that goes against these rules can result in backlash for the practitioner and is not using safe magic. Used correctly, a voodoo doll is a great magical tool for healing, balancing energies, and helping others in a multitude of ways. Just make sure you are on the right side of the Rules of the Road and as with all magical procedures, think it through and enjoy the magic!

About Magical Tools

Firebowl: 2 Element Cleansing Tool

The Firebowl is an essential altar item and magical tool for any magician or shaman. Used primarily to cleanse people, areas, sacred space and tools, the Firebowl can also be used for divination, finding lost people or objects, and meditation.

Although almost any bowl will do for a Firebowl, most traditional Firebowls are made of brass, ceramic, cast-iron or hardwood. Except for special bowls used for specific rituals, the bowl should be light enough and small enough that you can carry it in your hand.

To make a working Firebowl, put about two inches of fire clay (unscented cat litter will do), rice or beans in the bottom of the Firebowl to prevent the bowl from getting to hot. Put self-lighting mini-charcoal tablets on top of the fireclay, then add any resins or botanicals you want to burn.

Choose your resins and botanicals based on what you want to do with your Firebowl. For instance, if you want to meditate, use a Water element botanical to help you get in touch with Spirit. If you want to "see" a lost object, you might use an Air element botanical. Here's a short list of resins and botanicals, listed by element, to get you started:

All Purpose: Sage, juniper, copal and frankincense.
Air: Sandalwood, sage, mint and sweetgrass.
Fire: Pine, juniper and frankincense.
Water: Gardenia, lotus and rose.
Earth: Musk, mosses and myrrh

If you have difficulty quieting your mind during meditation, you can use the Firebowl. Simply light the charcoal tablet with paper or wooden matches until it starts to spark, then put a Water element botanical on top. When the combination begins to smoke, focus on the column of smoke. Having a visual focus that is irregular and difficult for your mind to follow will occupy your mind while you meditate. Good luck!

Wand: Magical Air Tool

The Wand is an essential magical tool and a crucial part of any magical altar. Like most magical tools, the Wand is an extension of our own energies, amplifying and extending those energies for psychic communication, healing, protection and energy balancing.

The most common misconception about the Wand is that it is a Fire tool. The Wand is actually an Air tool for the simple reason that it is made out of wood, which burns easily when in contact with Fire energies. While popular movies, such as Harry Potter, often portray the Wand as a multi-purpose tool that can handle Air and Fire energies, it is actually the Athame, or magical knife, that can handle multiple types of energy.

Wands should be made from the limb of a live tree (with proper permission from and thanks to the tree) or recently fallen from a live tree, preferably of a light-colored wood, since Air colors are clear, white and sky blue. The limb should be between ¼ and 3/8 inch, and be no longer than from the bend of your elbow to the tip of your middle finger.

While some Wands are carved with various patterns and designs, we find that a smooth surface with no carving produces the greatest and most effective flow of Air energies. The Wand should be pointed at one end and notched at the other.

Like most magical tools, your Wand should be "keyed" or personalized to your own energies. Keying aligns the flow of the Wand from base (notched end) to tip, and ensures that only you will be able to use it. If you're a beginning practitioner, the Wand is an excellent first tool, allowing you to practice the major techniques of sweeping, pulling, flowing and flaring without endangering yourself or others.

Athame: Magical Fire Tool

The Athame, or magical knife, is one of the most powerful of the magician's tools. As a Fire tool, it has the characteristics that are most often attributed to the Wand in popular movies and TV shows, including blasting, fireballs, lightning bolts and shields. Just as the Wand could not possibly be a Fire tool since it is made of wood, the Athame must be a Fire tool since it's forged in Fire. In addition to Fire energy, the Athame can also handle some Water and Earth energies. That makes it one of the most versatile of the magician's tools.

Most often used for self defense and shielding, the Athame is also a powerful healing tool. For instance, a skilled magician can use a beam of Fire energy from the Athame to seal or cauterize a wound that won't stop bleeding. This tool is also used to create full-cast circles, invoke deity beings during ritual and release psychic "ties" to other people.

Athames should be made of high carbon, nickel alloy, or chrome alloy steel. In addition, it should have a full tang, which means that the steel goes all the way through handle, and not be a folding knife. Finally, beginners should start with a single-edged blade with a straight edge (it's harder to control Fire energy through a double-edged or curved blade).

Like the Wand and other magical tools, the Athame should be "keyed" before use. Keying clears the tool of junky energies, aligns the energy to flow from handle to tip, and personalizes the Athame so that it is in tune with your own energies. Finally, you should store your Athame in a sheath or wrap it in a natural material such as cotton, wool, leather or silk.

Chalice: Magical Water Tool

The Chalice is often called the magical tool of the Spirit, since the Chalice is the magical Water tool and Water is the language of the Spirit. Most often used for divination, psychic communication and blessings, the Chalice is also used for protection of sacred objects, self-defense and healing.

The Chalice is associated with the West, and is the tool of feeling, emotion and connection. Goblet-shaped chalices work best, and should have a bowl that is large enough to store small magical objects (storing objects in your keyed chalice keeps them clear of unwanted energies). Chalices should be made of a single material, such as glass, ceramic, silver, pewter or copper. With the Chalice, as with all magical tools, you need to consider the characteristics of the element you're working with to determine what materials will work. Wood chalices, for instance, don't work well because wood doesn't flow Water energies well.

To work with your Chalice, you'll need some additional items, such as spring water (don't use chlorinated water, which has some unhealthy energies), rock or sea salt (don't use iodized salts) and an all natural material in which you can wrap your Chalice. For the most effective use, you'll also want to "key" your Chalice to personalize it to your own energies and set the Chalice energies rotating in the correct clockwise direction.

Plate: Magical Earth Tool

The Plate, also known in magical circles as the Shield or Pantacle, is the magical tool of the element Earth. Associated with the direction North, the plate is primarily a tool of protection and healing. Magicians and shamans often use the Plate to protect magical operations, such as divination or spellwork, from outside interference. Plates are also useful for storing magical objects you want to protect, similar to the chalice, and for self protection.

Ideally, Plates should be round in shape to produce the strongest energy vortex and beam, and should be of earth-colored material, which include greens, browns and blacks, or have plant-based designs on them. Ceramic, wood or porcelain Plates work well, as do metal and glass Plates. Avoid Plates that are too heavily carved with designs or patterns, since this can interfere with the Plate's energy flow and pattern.

To key or personalize your Plate for magical use, you'll need rock salt, non-chlorinated water and a pure cotton cloth. You'll also need a Firebowl and a spare Chalice. Keying ensures that the energy in your Plate flows in the appropriate direction for protection, healing and spellwork.

A little known fact about the Plate is that it is an important tool for simulacra or "voodoo" type magic. In addition, the Plate is also a "broadcaster," meaning that you can use it to broadcast certain energies into your environment.

If you are interested in expanding your magical "reach", then using magical tools will help you do that. You can find ebooks for each tool separately on our website, or just get some specific ways to use magical tools with our Kindle book, Learn How to Do Witchcraft Rituals and Spells with Magical Tools.

The Magical World of Ostriches

We've all heard about ostriches, those silly creatures that stick their heads in the sand and believe that if they can't see a predator, the predator can't see them. We giggle at them and make fun of them. Actually, ostriches don't put their heads in the sand, but if they did, it would make a lot of sense magically.

Why? Why does ignoring something that's clearly "there" make sense magically? Because a large part of magic is about the Art of Ignorance. There are a lot of definitions for magic, and one of the clearest definitions of magic is "The art of selective perception." In other words, focusing on only what we want to create with a spell or magical technique, and ignoring the rest. Magicians know that humans are energy beings, or to be more precise, energy vortexes. We constantly go around sucking people and events in our live with our focus and attention. What we focus on comes to us. It's the Law of Attraction.

In magic, when you're working on a spell, you start out with a really large focus and then you narrow it down. First you look at what you want to achieve and assess all the factors that might help or hinder that by doing tarot readings (wide focus). Tarot readings narrow the list down to a few key factors. Next, you design your spell, using candles, invocations, chants, litanies, simulacra or anything else that's pertinent. What you're doing with your spell is formalizing your intention (narrowing your focus) and calling on powers and beings to assist you. Finally, you launch your spell. So what happens when you launch your spell? Your spell goes out into the world as an energy matrix, powered by your intention and the help of the powers and beings you've called in to assist you. The first thing it does is hit resistance because of those factors that you discovered in the tarot reading. Now here's the key. If you were a novice magician and you looked at the situation when your spell hit resistance, you'd panic, right? You'd think to yourself, "The spell isn't working! I've got to do something!" Wrong. A seasoned magician is already prepared for the spell to hit resistance-after all, the tarot reading told you it would. If the spell didn't hit any resistance, you wouldn't need a spell. The experienced magician has designed the spell specifically to handle all the negative factors (resistance) that came up in the tarot reading.

So what does the seasoned magician do at this point? Practice the Art of Ignoring. She sticks her head in the sand and waits until it's all over. She allows the spell to work its miracles by not interfering, and not putting her attention on all the things that could go wrong or thinking negative thoughts about her spell.

All of this, of course, is a long-winded explanation about why ostriches are magically intelligent beings. They have learned the Art of Ignoring. So if you want something in your life to "miraculously" manifest, tell the Universe what you want (you can use plain English) then make like an ostrich and ignore everything until the miracle happens. Miracles are really just processes beyond our understanding. Magicians understand how miracles work (it doesn't mean they aren't impressed anyway) and intentionally create them in their lives. So ostriches aren't so dumb after all; maybe they were human magicians in another lifetime!

You can be a human magician in this lifetime by studying a variety of magical topics through our ebooks. Check them out and see which topics call to you.

The Power of Paper in Creating What You Want

Many of you probably had a lot of experience with journaling or writing your goals down on paper. But have you ever thought about why writing is such an effective activity? Why it seems to help you manifest your dreams or get rid of negative thoughts and emotions?

The power of paper lies in the fact that once we write something down, it has moved from our minds onto paper. This is a transition from the non-physical to the physical. Once something is in the physical, it's more tangible and real, and we have an easier time working with it. That's why it's great for either manifestation or releasing negative energies.

Writing something down on paper works for manifestation because it makes your thoughts more real and solid--one step closer to manifestation. Magically speaking, the more physical something is, the closer it is to becoming real in your world. For instance, in the earliest stage of manifestation, there might just be emotion and some vague, subliminal thoughts. Or there might be a single flash of inspiration, which is quickly forgotten.

Next, if the dream or idea takes hold, there will be active thought in conscious mind. This is more solid than the ephemeral dream state. After that, most people talk about the idea to others. This step moves the dream from inside you to the outside world. The idea has been expressed and now moves around in the outer world. Finally, the most permanent step before actual action happens is writing the idea down on paper. What is the power of paper in this process? It creates a physical anchor in the world for your idea. Something written down on paper can last a long time in the physical world, longer than a spoken word. It becomes like an anchor point for the actual manifestation (whether it be a car, relationship, or new job). So if you want to create something in your world, take it through these steps, and finish by writing what you want down on paper. The power of paper will surprise you!

How Paper Can Help Release Negativity
You can also use this same process to dump negative thoughts, emotions, and patterns. It works on the same principle. If something is really bothering you, get it out of mind and Spirit by putting it down on paper. This creates a physical anchor outside of you that those thoughts and emotions can latch onto. Once you're done writing, burn the paper in a fire proof location (like a kitchen sink or in a firebowl). This process gets everything out of you and connects it to a new physical anchor. Burning the paper releases those thoughts and emotions back into the universe, away from you.

Writing things down on paper works because thoughts and emotions are attracted to physical anchors. Normally, our bodies act as a sort of physical anchor for our thoughts and emotions. If we want to move those thoughts and emotions out into the world, for manifestation or release, we have to create another anchor, which is the written word. You'll find lots of other magical solutions to release negativity and manifest what you desire in life in our Witchcraft Spell Book Series.

Using Astrology in Daily Life

Even if you know absolutely nothing about astrology, you've probably been influenced by it-whether you're reading your horoscope in the supermarket checkout line or listening to people talk about Mercury retrograde. While astrology can seem like a complex subject, the good news is that you can get a lot of wonderful guidance from astrology just by studying your daily transits.

Daily transits are the parts of astrology that show us opportunities for growth and change in our everyday lives based on the patterns in our birth charts. If we study the transits that are coming up in our lives, we stand a much better chance of learning valuable life lessons without all the pain.

Years ago I ran a number of experiments concerning the nature of these transits and how they operate in our lives. I discovered that every transit has a lesson to help us with our interrelation with other people and our goals in life. When I studied these lessons and took appropriate action ahead of time, the transit passed without pain or chaos and I was "off the hook." If I didn't study the transit ahead of time, my life became quite chaotic and I had to learn the lesson the hard way.

There are many good books that can teach you the significance of the different transits in your chart. For instance, a square aspect (90 degree angle) represents difficulty or challenge. If you know that such a situation is coming up soon, you can review the different areas of your life and see what might be affected. You can then take appropriate steps and save yourself a lot of heartache.

The Manifestation Delay

One of the crucial points that people often overlook is the delay between thoughts/feelings and actual manifestation. There is a period of delay between what you are thinking and feeling, and what is manifesting. The life you are living today is actually the result of thoughts and feelings that you had yesterday, last week, last month, last year or even last lifetime. Your physical reality is always one step behind your mental and emotional processes.

So what implications does this have for your manifestation? It means that if you're working on manifesting something in your life, you shouldn't look to your current physical reality as an accurate gauge of how well you are doing. Your current reality can only show you how well you have done in the past.

If you look at your current reality and find it displeasing, don't try to do anything to change it. It's just the end result of your earlier manifestation efforts. When you take steps to physically change your reality, you're not really affecting your future – only your past.

While traditional wisdom says that we should "be responsible" and take steps to change our reality, ancient esoteric wisdom says that putting our attention only on what we want (not on what already is) is our true responsibility. It's much more responsible to take control of your thoughts and feelings in the moment than it is to try to change what has already manifested.

If you truly want to learn to manifest in a consistent fashion, from today forth, when you look at the messes and disasters in your life, don't try to change it all. Instead, ask yourself what you want, and then focus all of your attention there. This will produce a better tomorrow, which, in turn, will produce a better next day. Always, always ask yourself, "What do I want?" Putting your attention on what you want, rather than focusing on the disasters that you don't want, will create a better reality than you could ever imagine.

Ready to start living a magical life? Our Witchcraft Spell Books series can help you get started.
