Do You Have the Basic Tools Necessary for Effective Magic?

Once an understanding of the 4 magic elements - Air, Water, Fire, and Earth - and how to work with them has been achieved, it is time to use them with magic tools. Each of the 4 elements has its own unique magic tool associated with it that helps you extend your reach and your own energies with magic techniques as the tool can handle more energy than our hands alone. Having the right tool for the right job makes sure any project produces optimal results whether you are talking about magic, building a bird house or baking a cake. In the case of magic using the right magic tool means using the tool for each element that is able to conduct each particular elemental energy.

The Wand – Magic Air Tool
The magic tool that conducts the Air element is the Wand. It is only devised to handle Air energies characterized by the colors clear, white and sky blue. It should never be used with energies of any of the other 3 magic elements. There are Wands that can be purchased, but we have our students make their own Wands from a recently fallen or live tree of air oriented wood such as white pine, birch, willow, or aspen. The Wand must then be keyed to clear out junky energies, attune the tool to your own personal energies, and to align the molecules in it so that energies flow only in certain directions. Once all this is done, the Wand is ready to use for such magic operations as sending messages, building Air shields such as omnils, door shields, window curtains and half shields, and for healing techniques.

The Athame – Magic Fire Tool
The Athame is the magic tool that conducts Fire element energies. Fire element energies are characterized by the colors Sun Yellow, Yellow Orange, Orange Red, Red, Deep Red, Deep Red-Purple, and Electric Blue. When selecting an Athame to use as a magic tool, look for a knife with a single-edged blade that is straight, not curved, made from high carbon, nickel alloy or chrome alloy steel and that has a full tang which means the steel goes all the way through the handle or mostly all the way through. It also should not be a folding knife. Hunting stores, pawnshops, and magic stores are often good places to look for your Athame. Once you have selected your Athame, it needs to be keyed to personalize it to your particular energies, line up the molecules for energy to flow from base to tip and clear out negative energies. Once you have your Athame and it is keyed, you are ready to use it for operations such as making fire omnils and other types of fire energy shields, cutting psychic lines, banishments, sending messages, and healing.

The Chalice – Magic Water Tool
The Chalice is the magic tool used with Water element energies. Water element energies are characterized by the colors Water Blue, Deep Blue and Blue-Black. When selecting a Chalice for your Water magic tool it should be a goblet shaped cup with a stem made of one material such as glass or ceramic. Combinations of materials do not work as well. The Chalice can also be made of silver, pewter or copper, but glass is sometimes preferred so you can easily see what is inside. A Chalice made of wood is not a good selection because wood has too much of the air element in it. The Chalice, like the other tools must also be keyed before using it as a magic tool. Then you are ready to use it to do four element cleansings, throwing energetic water bolts, capturing as in simulacra magic, magic protection techniques, sending psychic messages, and healing.

The Plate – Magic Earth Tool
The magic tool to use with Earth element energies is the Plate. Earth energy colors include Grass Green and Earth Brown. When selecting a Plate to add to your magic toolbox, the best is one that is made of wood, ceramic or porcelain, although glass or metal will also work. It should be decorated with earth tone colors or have plant-based designs. If it does have patterns or designs on it though, make sure they are not carved deeply into the plate. The plate should be between six and ten inches in diameter so that you can easily hold it with your thumbs in the center of the plate and the rest of your fingers on the edge of the plate. It should also be a round plate and be slightly dished in the center. As with the other magic tools, the plate needs to be keyed before using. Once the plate it keyed, it is ready to use for such magic operations as shielding, cutting lines, keying Tarot cards, for use in simulacra magic and in magical healing.

The right tool for the right job. Now that you have some idea of how magic tools work and how they are used, you can find more information about all the magic tools and directions for using them for magical procedures in our Magical Tools ebooks

Keying Your Magic Tools for Personal Use

I recently started wearing this fabulous pewter dragon bracelet as part of a spell I launched. I very much wanted the energies of the dragon as part of my magic spell, so the bracelet was a perfect match.

I have received a lot of comments on the dragon bracelet, especially since we are in Cancun, Mexico for five weeks and this is not the usual "tourist-type" jewelry.

Several people have asked me why I wear the bracelet and how I use it for my magic practice. This fascinates most people endlessly, and they are eager to get their own talisman or amulet from our online store as soon as they get home to the States.

I'm delighted that others are as fascinated with the bracelet as I am, and while I definitely want them to enjoy the same kind of dragon magic I'm getting from the bracelet, I warn them that just having the bracelet isn't enough. The bracelet, like any magical tool, has to be "keyed" to a person's unique energies so that it works for them. Otherwise, it's just a bracelet.

How to Key General Magic Tools
There are specific ways to key the tools for each of the four elements (Air, Fire, Water, and Earth), but if you want to use a general magic tool, like my bracelet, there is a very simple way to "key" it so that it works with your personal and unique energies. Here's how:

1. Put the object in your dominant hand (usually the hand with which you point or write)

2. Hold the object and flow energy into it. If you want to use the tool for a specific purpose, flow images or thoughts about that purpose through your hand as well. I sometimes also chant a spell verse while doing this.

3. Continue with this process until the magic tool feels "charged," warm, or tingly. At that point, your magic tool has been keyed to your specific energy, and will work for you personally.

This generally works well for any general magic tool. For the specific tools associated with the magical elements, including the Firebowl, Wand, Athame, Chalice, and Plate, there are more detailed keying instructions since these tools are designed to handle much more magical energy. These tools can also be used many ways for different magic rituals and operations, especially spell work, banishments, blessings, and cleansings.

To learn more about how to key and use these tools, check out our ebooks on each tool in our online store.

What Harry Potter Doesn't Know About Magic Tools

In the Harry Potter movies, Harry uses his wand for every type of magical act, from throwing bolts of lightning to using it underwater. Unfortunately, the Wand is an Air tool and is best used for acts such as magical communication, message-sending, and Air-type healings. But not to criticize Harry too much since he is entertaining and we enjoy his stories; even most Tarot decks use Fire colors for Wands and Air Colors for Swords or Athames, which is completely backwards. So what are real magic tools and what elements do they conduct? Here's a short list of the tools for each of the four elements and what types of magical operations you could expect to use each of the magic tools for.

Wand – Air Element Tool
The Wand is the magic tool that is designed to conduct Air element energies. It would be used for:
  • sending messages to others in the Air colors clear, white or sky blue
  • constructing Air element omnils and shields for doors and windows
  • putting up Air element half shields for protection
  • healing techniques including sweeping with Air colors, pulling Air colors and Touch Assist

Athame – Fire Element Tool

The Athame is a magical knife designed to conduct Fire element energies including the colors of Sun Yellow, red-orange, yellow-orange, bright red, red-purple, and electric blue. It would be used for magical operations such as:
  • creating Fire element color door and window shields and omnils that last longer than Air shields
  • putting up Fire element half shields for protection
  • banishing unwanted spirits from a space
  • cutting psychic lines
  • healing with fire energy including sweeping Fire element colors, pulling Fire element colors and using beams of Fire energy to breakup and remove problems (i.e. – kidney stones)

Chalice – Water Element Tool
The Chalice or Cup is the magic tool designed to conduct Water element energies. It would be used for such magical techniques as:
  • Four Element cleansings of an area, person or object
  • Nighttime Blessing ritual
  • throwing bolts of water energy
  • making a standing shield similar to an ominil to capture watchers or archetypes or for protection for small objects to keep negative energies away or for simulacra
  • sending messages that affect others on an emotional level
  • creating a psychic communication link with another
  • healing by flowing water energy to flush something out of the system or dissolve something such as calcification in arthritic joints, and pulling excess water energy from someone

Plate – Earth Element Tool
The plate or pentacle is the magic tool designed to conduct Earth element energies of grass green and earth brown. It can be used for magical operations such as:
  • shielding
  • cutting psychic lines on yourself
  • healing by using beams of Earth energies
  • keying Tarot cards and for use in Tarot readings
  • making a plate and chalice protection

Basically anything you can do with your hands and the elements magically, you can do with tools. The magic tools just help you extend your reach and often give more strength to your technique. You do have to be sure you are using the right tool with its corresponding element however or your results could fail or even worse you could damage your magic tools. If you are ready to move on to using magic tools and learn all the techniques mentioned above and more, our Magic Tool ebooks might be just what you've been looking for. There is an ebook in this series for each of the magic tools that correspond to the four elements as well as for using the Firebowl. Learn how to select or make each tool, key it to your own energies, align its elemental energies, and techniques for using each tool on your own schedule in your own time. It's a great way to extend your magical practice and bring more magic to your life.

Ask Alan: Why Use Magical Tools?

We just got an email that raises an interesting question. The author of the email says, "We don't need any sticks or wands or anything. We have the powers in are hands just as well in are head."

This raises an interesting question:

Why use magical tools?

This is a great question, and the author of the email is right. Everyone possesses and can channel magical energy using their hands, directing the energy with their intention (head). In fact, most magicians learn to handle the four elemental energies-Air, Fire, Water, and Earth-bare-handed, without the benefit of tools. It is best when you are first starting out in magic to handle these energies directly, with your hands, and throughout your body. We call this hand magic, or the direct handling of elements.

Magical Tools Give You More Reach
However, as you advance your skills, the use of magical tools is important. Magical tools extend our "reach," since they can handle more energies than we can handle with our hands. This greater level of energy means that we can reach further with the elemental energies to accomplish more.

For instance, you can easily to put up a personal magical shield around your body using your hands. It is simple to summon and direct enough energy through your hands. However, if you wanted to shield a house or a large property, you can do it much more easily with a tool, like a Wand. With the use of a properly made and keyed Wand, you can easily shield a property that includes many acres. It's possible to do the same using just your hands, but the level of force is much greater. The Wand saves you quite a bit of exertion.

Each of the four magical elements has its own corresponding tool, as follows:

Air element = Wand
Fire element = Athame

Water element = Chalice

Earth element = Plate

By using magical tools, experienced practitioners can affect situations on many levels, ranging from the personal level to the global level.
