The Anatomy of a Magic Spell

When many people think of magic, they think of a magic spell such as they have seen on TV or in the movies. These fictional works often don't portray the way real magic spells work or what they actually are. Magic spells are a real part of a magical practice however and you can do amazing things when you use them correctly.

About Magic Spells
Basically a magic spell is any psychic or magical operation that uses some combination of the four elements, air, fire, water and earth and programs factors into the energy matrix that is built using these elements to produce a certain result over a certain period of time. A magic spell is usually used when there are complex factors or barriers that have to be overcome to achieve the goal. Magic spells are not usually the first operation that magical practitioners turn to however since they require a bit more work and preparation and often a simpler magical technique will do. But in cases where we are not able to directly affect a situation with other magical techniques, a magic spell is well worth the extra effort it requires. Our students learn how to create magic spells in the third part of Basic Magic. Whereas you can go to this level just to learn about magic spells, it is recommended that you take Level 1 and Level 2 first so that you have a sound foundation of magical practice before attempting spellwork. Having this foundation not only helps you create a better spell from the perspective of understanding what elements will be helpful to build into the spell, it also helps keep you out of trouble with the Universe and avoid backlash should you build something into the spell unintentionally. After all the Universe doesn't care what you intended to do, only what you did do and will deliver accordingly. So for example, if you are creating a spell to receive a certain amount of money and neglect to include in your directors and limiters that no person will be harmed for that money to come to you, you may find yourself the beneficiary of a life insurance policy that a beloved family member has left you. The problem with this is that they had to die for you to get it. Maybe not what you intended.

Creating a Magic Spell
When beginning spellwork, it is a good idea to start with simple spells that would produce a small effect in a short time. Then as you see results from these type of spells and increase your experience with them, you can move on to magic spells that are more complicated, operate over a longer period of time to gain more force, and cover more complicated issues. Just to give you an idea of what all is involved with the creation of a magic spell, here is a list of the basic skills you should have before attempting to create a magic spell.
  • Understanding of basic magical operational laws and how they work

  • Basic working knowledge of the four elements and their characteristics and correspondences

  • Knowing how to find the exact meanings of any words being used in a spell verse and choose appropriate ones

  • Know how to think through creating directors and limiters for a spell to include specifics of what the spell should accomplish and protect against unwanted contingencies

  • Have an understanding of how sonics works and how the spell can be affected by the tone of voice you use as well as the sounds used

  • Have an understanding of various types of magic spell formats such as candle spells and Tarot spells and be able to choose which type will be the most effective in your situation

  • Be able to use Tarot card readings to obtain information on what aspects may need to be included in a proposed spell, get information on if the spell will work as designed, to check up on your directors and limiters for the spell and to check up on the progress of the spell once it is launched

  • Have an understanding of how to write effective spell verses

  • If doing a candle spell, how to design and prepare the candle for carving and anointing and choose effective colors and symbols for it

  • Know how to pick the timing for launching a magic spell according to astrological and other factors that can affect the spell

  • Know how to record the spell in your Book of Shadows

  • Know how to take a magic spell down should you need to in case something goes awry with it

As you can see there is quite a bit of preparation and work involved in creating a magic spell. You can also see why Basic Magic Level 1 and Level 2 are recommended before going on to Level 3 and starting spellwork. Having the foundation of lots of practice with the four elements and with magical tools will help get you ready for the tasks involved in creating a successful spell. And whereas a magic spell may take more work than other magical techniques and operations, there are times when it is necessary, can give you a real sense of achievement, and is just plain fun to do.

My Magic Spell Didn't Work -- Now What?

You did all the right things. You did divination before you launched your magic spell to see if it would produce the right results. You gathered the right symbols for the spell. You cleansed your space prior to the launch. Then you launched it ... and nothing's happening.

Now what?

Good question. There are quite a few reasons that magic spells don't work for people, and I've listed the three biggest reasons I see below. Check them out and see if they are true for your spell. If so, you might want to take down the existing one and start over.

1. You Are Trying to Accomplish Too Many Things
A lot of people believe that if they must go to the trouble to design, write, test, and launch a spell, they might as well put all their life's desire into the spell. Spellwork does take a lot of time and energy, so people don't want to waste it. Consequently, they pack it with everything they have ever wanted, from a dream trip to Europe to winning the lottery.

While I can certainly understand the motivation of not wanting to waste effort, I know that this is also the reason that a lot of spells don't work. A spell isn't like a menu, where you can pack in a bunch of different choices. The principle of a spell is more like the main principle followed by military snipers: "One shot. One kill." For a spell, the principle is "One spell. One aim."

If your spell didn't produce the intended results, look it over, especially your list of Directors and Limiters, and see if you packed your spell with too many demands. That might be the reason it isn't performing.

2. You Used Someone Else's Spell
There are a lot of books out there on spell work, and a lot of good spells that you can use to achieve some aim. If you just want to achieve something small, like a better mindset for studying or attracting a small chunk of money owed to you, using someone else's pre-written spell often works very well.

Where I see this approach fail is when people use a pre-written spell to try to create a major change in their lives. For instance, to transform yourself from a poor country mouse to an instant millionaire isn't going to happen if you use someone else's pre-written spell. It also probably won't work if you have someone else launch their pre-written spell for you. If you want to create this kind of change, plan on writing and designing your own spell.

3. You Haven't Waited Long Enough
This one is a biggie. We teach people to specify date ranges in their spells. This gives your spells some freedom in which to work. For instance, you might specify in your Directors and Limiters that you want to your magic spell to produce results between 3 and 6 months from the date of launch. This allows your spell to find that time of least resistance in which to create the desired change.

Having said that, I've seen big spells that don't work in the specified time period, but do eventually work. I launched a big one once to stop a bill from passing in Congress. The bill passed (which meant my spell didn't have the desired effect at that time) but was later over-ridden by another bill. Another example is a big spell my wife wrote to get a farm. She specified that the spell should produce a certain type of farm plus the needed income to buy the farm within one year. We didn't get the farm in one year. Instead, we ended up with a better farm three years later, with more income than was needed to buy the farm.

If you've launched a big spell, by which I mean a multiple-candle or Tarot-style spell, sometimes the results do not happen in the time period you specify, especially if the spell has to overcome a lot of resistance. Be patient. If you want to check whether you magic spell is still working, once your specified date range has passed, do Tarot readings to find out.

The Art and Craft of Spellwork
Spellwork is one of the high arts of magic, and it takes time, practice, and dedication to master, especially if you want to create change on a large scale. It does work. I've seen spells work over and over with good consistency.

Spellwork is also one of my favorite magical arts to teach because the people who are interested in this art are generally talented, interesting, and fabulous to work with. If this sounds like you, and if you are interested in learning the craft of spellwork, you may want to consider our online Basic Magic Course. Spellwork is covered in Level 3, but taking the first two levels gives you a solid magical foundation. If you are looking for a more simple solution to spellwork take a look at our Witchcraft Spell Book series on Kindle.

Maximizing the Power of Your Magic Spell: Choosing the Right Format

There are lots of people out there casting all kinds of magic spells, and experiencing various levels of success. Obviously, if you're going to cast a spell you want to maximize the power of the spell so you can achieve your goal as quickly and easily as possible. One thing many spell-casters don't consider when they choose a spell is the format of the spell, but the format of a spell has a lot to do with its power. The format of the spell should match the goal you are trying to achieve with your spell.

For instance, suppose the neighbors in the apartment next door are extremely annoying and you want to replace them with better neighbors. This is a fairly simple and direct objective so you don't want to use an overly complicated or powerful spell otherwise you might create too much effect, too quickly. If you use a powerful multi-candle spell for this situation, you might create a constant stream of people moving in and out of the apartment, with none of them staying long and all of them causing a lot of disruption with the constant moving.

On the other hand, if you used a fairly simple simulacra spell, using figurines to represent neighbors (similar to voodoo dolls), you could easily move your current neighbors to a different zip code with a map-moving spell. Then you could use a simple come-along, which features a detailed description of the neighbors you do want placed on a keyed plate under a magnet, to bring new desirable neighbors in. By using a simple and direct spell to achieve a simple objective, you would focus all of the spell's power toward a single aim (getting new neighbors) yet not overpower the situation.

If you're not sure which magic spell format to use for which situations, here's a short list of spell formats you can use as a guide.

1. Come Along
This is the most basic kind of magic spell. Write a list of what you do and don't want the spell to do (also called directors and limiters). Put it on a keyed plate under a magnet. Allow the magnet to bring the desired outcome.

2. Simulacra Magic
Use a figurine or other object (a simulacrum) to represent a person or thing. Key the simulacrum by holding the object in your dominant hand and flowing energy and thoughts about the person or object into the simulacrum. Do to the simulacrum what you want done to the person or thing. For instance, you can key an apple to a tumor and then allow the apple to rot and disintegrate so that the tumor shrinks and disintegrates, too.

3. Single Candle Spell
These magic spells involve a single carved candle, directors and limiters, and a chant. After doing divinations to ensure that all the aspects of the spell will achieve the desired effect, you carve symbols representing the desired outcome of your spell on a candle, and place the directors and limiters plus candle on a keyed plate. You launch the spell by lighting the candle and saying the chant. You may want to repeat the lighting of the candle and chanting to increase the power of the spell. Use this kind of magic spell to handle situations that have some complexity and need quite a bit of force.

4. Multiple Candle Spells
These magic spells are similar to single candle spells but involve multiple candles. Each candle is carved and is used to tackle a different aspect of the spell. Use these spells for situations that are complex and deal with multiple issues. For instance, this kind of spell is appropriate if you want to buy a piece of property. The spell can address multiple issues such as attracting the money for a down-payment, getting your loan approved, finding the right piece of property, and having your offer accepted on the property.

5. Tarot Spells
These are among the most complex magic spells and take an enormous amount of effort to construct. These spells involve the use of multiple candles and a Tarot layout. Use these spells to tackle changes at a state, national, or world level. For instance, Tarot spells have been used to stop pieces of legislation from passing or to affect global weather patterns.

Why A Spell Doesn't Have to Be Complicated

While some magical spells, such as Tarot or multiple candle spells, CAN be complicated, you can also do magical spells that are effective while remaining simple. Our Kindle book 3 outlines a number of simple spells, including using apples magically to get rid of the unwanted such as extra weight, bad debt, bad habits or a health condition, using a magical plate for healing, and getting rid of negative thoughts and emotions with the Firebowl Burn and lots more simple spells and rituals.

You'll also find lots of magical information in this book to help guide you in starting a magic practice. For example, do you know the difference in a ritual and a spell?

What is a Magic Spell?
A spell is a psychic or magic operation or formalized intention utilizing a combination of the elements Air, Fire, Water and Earth, forming them into an energy matrix, and possibly programming factors in it to gain force, momentum and overcome obstacles in order to produce a certain result over a period of time. By this definition chants, litanies, rituals, sonics and even prayers are magic spells. A spell will accomplish its goal by taking the path of least resistance unless directors and limiter (what the spell will and will not do) are programmed into it. This means that even if the goal is in accordance with Rules of the Road governing magical practice, the path it follows to get there may not be in accordance and can be destructive. For this reason a spell requires much more planning and is usually a more complex or involved operation.

What is a Magic Ritual?
A ritual is a type of spell that is usually of the more simple variety. It is typically used more often than other types of spells and repeated even daily to form relationships with and receive guidance from higher beings and powers or to deepen and reaffirm our intentions. Rituals and spells both produce effects that many would view as miraculous, but to higher powers they are normal. Higher powers and beings live on a higher plane than we here on the Earth plane do and the practice of miracles is commonplace for them. Using magical rituals allows us to bring these beings in to guide and help us achieve our desires.

This is just a bit of the magic information awaiting you in Learn How to Do Witchcraft Rituals and Spells with Magical Tools. Get the book for yourself and explore all the magic knowledge and try out the magical procedures for yourself. It's an easy way to study magic on your own schedule in your own time.

Top 7 Reasons A Magic Spell Fails

After our students master using the 4 Elements and magical tools, they are ready to start Level 3 of the Basic Magic Course which concentrates on the Tarot, spellwork and using simulacra magic. A spell is a psychic or magical operation combining the 4 elements in some way and programming in factors to produce particular results over a certain period of time. A magic spell is a formalized intention designed to achieve a specific goal or affect a specific condition or situation. They are particularly useful when there are complex factors, barriers or obstacles that need a lot of force to overcome. A spell forms an energy matrix that is programmed to build momentum and overcome those obstacles until the goal is manifested. We teach our students to use directors and limiters when creating a magic spell so that the goal is reached safely without breaking any of the magical Rules of the Road. If a spell is not programmed with these safeguards it will take the path of least resistance towards the goal and you may get the end result, but in a way that comes about through things you don't want to happen. For example, if you just ask for a certain amount of money and don't specify that it cause no harm or loss of property or life to any other living being, you may get the amount of money you desire, but possibly it comes through the death of a beloved relative. We often hear stories along these lines or get questions from people wondering why their spell is not working and where they went wrong. For that reason we've compiled a list of the top 7 reasons we see that causes a magic spell to fail. Here's what we came up with.

1. No directors and limiters – as we pointed out above, having directors and limiters written into a spell programs it in a way that tells it exactly what you do want to happen and what you don't want to happen. It may be that your spell is working, but that you did not put in enough particulars to see the results. For example, say you created a spell to make it rain. But did you specify where you wanted that rain and how much and within what time period. It is probably raining somewhere as a result of your spell, but maybe not where and when you really wanted it to.

2. Unclear directors and limiters – Are your directors and limiters precise and clear and appropriate for the situation? Take a look at them again or maybe have another pair of magical eyes take a look at them. It could be that you are too specific. Remember that your directors should tell what, when, and where but not how the goal is accomplished. The how part is up to the Universe to find. If you are too controlling in your spell there is no room for the Universe to do its part. It could also be that you have not written your verses, or directors and limiters in a concise and understandable way or that you have hidden issues blocking the spell. For example, if you are asking for a particular type of relationship to appear in your life, but you have not done the emotional work to really be ready to handle that type of relationship (ie.- the level of your being attracts the level of your life), then you may be sending out mixed messages.

3. Not enough range in directors and limiters – Look at your directors and limiters to make sure you are leaving enough "wiggle" room for the Universe to realistically manifest the goal. For example, if you say I want to have 1 million dollars within the next hour that is not a realistic goal. A magic spell needs to have the time to gain force and grow.

4. Binding verses or directors and limiters – Rules of the Road say binding is a definite violation of universal magical practice. If you are not following Universal laws then your spell can very likely fizzle out and not be able to attract the energy it needs.

5. Not using a powerful enough format for what you want the spell to do – A spell can be cast in a variety of ways and you need to choose a way in creating and launching the spell that is in accordance with the amount of energy it will need. You can get some ideas of the obstacles you may encounter by doing a Tarot reading and that can give you information that will help you select an appropriate format. By definition, a chant, litany and even prayers are all spells. These may be appropriate at achieving certain goals, but others may be complex enough that they require a simple single candle spell. On the other hand if you use a simple candle spell when you need a multiple candle spell or a tarot spell, then you may not have enough force in your spell to overcome the obstacles it encounters.

6. Not matching the spell's launch date to the waxing or waning of the moon – When you launch your spell is also an important part of the planning and creating of it. If you are wanting to attract more or increase something, then you will want to launch it during a waxing moon period. On the other hand if you are trying to reduce something, shrink it, or rid yourself of something, you want to launch your spell during a waning moon period.

7. Not having a good enough relationship with the Universe – The Universe is always ready to help, but as with relationships among people, the better working relationship you have with the Universe through the use of daily rituals, the more likely and more quickly the Universe will step in to help you.

So there you have our 7 top reasons a magic spell may appear to not be working or actually may not be working. If you are ready to move on to learning to do effective and safe spells, then the Basic Magic Level 3 Online course is the one for you.

How Well is Your Magic Spell Working?

Are you ready to get into the magic of spellwork? If so, our Basic Magic Level 3 online course is for you. One of the things we stress in teaching students to create a magic spell, is how to use the precision science of magic to create and launch spells that will be safe and effective. Doing Tarot readings is one of the tools taught in this course that help with that.

How Tarot Readings Help in Spellwork
A spell is a formalized intention, an actual energy form that overcomes obstacles to achieve a stated aim. When designing a magic spell, one of the beginning steps we have our students do is a 12 card Tarot reading on the topic of the spell. For example, if the magic spell was to get a new job, the reading might use the 8 of Discs which is the career card, as a signifier. The information in the reading from upright and reverse flow lines helps in creating the spell as the reverse lines usually show the obstacles that the spell needs to overcome.

After doing this initial Tarot reading on the topic of the spell, we also do another 12 card reading to find out whether the magic spell will work. We use the same signifier as before and put the Magi card on top of and to the right of that signifier. This reading will give you information on whether a spell will be effective in improving the situation. Reversed cards in this reading relate the issues that need to be addressed in the spell or issues that the spell cannot handle and you will need to handle yourself.

These two readings also give you information needed to write the directors and limiters for a safe and effective spell. Once directors and limiters are written for the spell, it is also a good idea to do a 12 card Tarot reading specifically on them. Take a paper that you have written them on, key it, and put it on top of and to the right of the original signifier and the Magi card. Reversed lines in this reading show you the areas where the spell will find trouble or give you information on certain issues that you will need to deal with that are outside the parameters of the magic spell. For this reading, you may want to do progression readings to look further into the future as sometimes spells take time to gather the force needed to overcome obstacles. This reading will also give you information to see if you need to make adjustments to the directors and limiters that you have written. When you make changes to them, do another reading with the newly written version until you get a reading that has little or no reversed cards.

About 2 weeks after your spell has been launched is a good time to do another 12 card Tarot reading to check in with the spell's progress. Use the original topic signifier with the Magi on top and to the right of it. Reversed cards in this reading will indicate any interference the spell is coming up against. This interference could be from yourself or from outside sources. Look at the reverse flow lines in relation to your life and attitudes to see if something within you is causing the interference. This could be old beliefs, doubts, fears or any number of issues inside yourself. Do whatever you need to in order to stop those issues from interfering, wait a few days and do another reading. If you have dealt with those issues, you will see the reversed flow lines cleared up. If the interference is not within you, do a progression reading further into the future to see if the spell can overcome it successfully. As your spell is working, you can do a reading every couple of weeks to check on the progress and see if there are any obstacles that you need to deal with.

Don't worry if this sounds like a lot, it's all covered in the Basic Magic Level 3 course, from Tarot readings to spellwork of various types. Spellwork can be lots of fun and taking the time to do all the checkups will help make your spells safe and effective in getting the results you want. How Magic Spells Can Be Useful in Life

Here's an example of how magic spells can help you out in your everyday life. This situation happened many years back, I believe sometime around 1990. Being a doctor of Chinese medicine, I was concerned when I heard that a Senator had proposed a bill that would cause all herbs (including Chinese herbs), supplements, vitamins and other such products to fall under the regulation of the FDA. I could envision various scenarios resulting from this type of bill that would be detrimental to businesses that deal in these type of products including a possible requirement of having a prescription from an M.D. Since the majority of M.D.'s at this time did not believe nutritional supplements to be helpful, that would keep many people who receive benefit from these products from getting them. From what I had heard, the bill had passed the Senate and was on its way to the house where it seemed like it had majority support and would pass.

I decided to use a magic spell to kill the bill. And I decided I would use a Tarot magic spell. This was my first room-sized tarot spell. I needed an entire room to do the candle and matrix setup as it required a great amount of force. Tarot magic spells of this size can be quite difficult to balance because you are actually walking inside the matrix. I in fact did get off balance at one point, became quite dizzy and had to put it out and start over.

For those of you not familiar with how Tarot magic spells work, you have to first do a Tarot reading on the original condition. Then using the law that states a small change in the present can lead to a bigger change in the present, you decide on a small change or changes that you can make. You then do one or more Tarot readings on your proposed changes to see what effect they will have. Once you find a change that your reading shows will give you the effect you want, you write the magic spell verses around it. At this point, even those of you familiar with the Tarot may be somewhat confused. My understanding is that the way we do Tarot readings at the Esoteric School is not common practice by others. When we do Tarot readings, we use a signifier card or cards. The base signifier card represents the overall situation and the 2nd card placed across the bottom of the base card represents the particulars of the situation. This allows us to get very specific readings on events.

As you can probably tell, Tarot magic spells do require quite a bit of time and effort. The results however are well worth it. In this instance, on the day of the vote for this proposed bill, the Senator that introduced the bill withdrew it before time for the vote begin. Did my magic spell bring this about? I say yes it certainly did. What do you say?

To learn more about doing Tarot readings for yourself check out our Tarot Homestudy Course.

Earth's Atmosphere Gets Some Help from Magic Spells

I continue to share magic spells I have created and performed to help heal the planet. This particular one concentrated on removing excess carbon monoxide from the Earth's atmosphere. I used simulacra magic for this magic spell, sometimes referred to as Voodoo magic.

I have been concerned for quite some time about the build-up of carbon monoxide, specifically over the last 20 years, in our atmosphere. According to various sources I researched, in 2009 the global average concentration was 387 parts per million and by 2012 and 2013 readings of CO2 showed these numbers increasing to 400 parts per million, the highest in the Earth's history. We can all do much to decrease our use of fossil fuels and help with this problem. But those of us in the magical community can do more using magic spells.

Here's what I've done. I set up a keyed plate (magical tool for Earth element) with a small round simulacrum of the Earth. Also in my set-up on the plate is a pendant of a crescent moon and a funnel with one side coming off the Earth object and pointing towards the moon pendant. This design is intended to remove not only carbon monoxide, but also 40 poisonous chemicals from the Earth's atmosphere and send it to the moon. Since the moon is building its own atmosphere, these chemicals that are harmful to our atmosphere and the destruction of the ozone layer, will be helpful there. I then launched the spell reading the verses, placed the written verses on the plate and covered the plate with a keyed chalice (magical tool for Water element). Of course this is not a "quick fix" magic spell. Spells on the world level especially cleaning up "messes" can take time and this one is ongoing since any CO2 funneled out is quickly replaced by societies so dependent on fossil fuels.

If you are already following a magical practice, I encourage you to also use your magical abilities to help heal the planet with magic spells. If you do not have a magical practice, it's never too late to start developing one. We have plenty of resources on our website to help you get started. At the very least, find one intentional act you can personally do to reduce your use of fossil fuel and do it. Your one intentional act becomes an act of power and of magic and it adds to the healing energy. Together, through magic, we CAN heal the planet.

What is a Magic Spell?

What is a magic spell, indeed? We get questions all the time about magic spells, what they are, how to create them, how to cast them, and so forth. In fact, it seems to be a subject of such fascination that we have decided to write an entire series of newsletter articles about it.This series of articles will really dig into the process of creating and casting spells, and could aptly be named, "The Anatomy of a Spell"!

What is a Magic Spell: The Definition
But first ... the definition. What is a magic spell? Here is our official word on the matter:

"A spell is any psychic or magical operation that combines a number of elements (air, fire, water and earth) and/or program factors that produce a particular result over a period of time. A spell could also be defined as a formalized intention that is carried out over time until completion. We use spells when we are unable to directly affect a situation or condition, especially when dealing with complex factors or barriers which require a lot of force to overcome."

So there you have it. This gives you both a formal and an informal definition of a magical spell--a technical definition and a layman's approach of "a formalized intention." Simple, right?

The Anatomy of a Magic Spell
While the definition of a magic spell may certainly be simple--or at the very least, straightforward--the actual workings of a spell can get a little more complex. The ingredients that go into a spell can take a bit more planning and time and effort than the average Joe may think. Whilst a simple Sun Candle spell can be done with much less effort than what we are about to define in the following section, the spells that are meant to address more complex topics can require much more from the practitioner. This is appropriate as spells are like anything else in life: you get out of them what you put into them.

If we were to break down the anatomy of a spell, we might separate it into these parts:
  1. Define what is wanted
  2. Decide the type of spell to cast (for instance, single candle spell, multiple candle spell, Tarot spell, or spells using archetype technology)
  3. Convert desired outcome into Directors and Limiters (formalized statements of what the spell will and will not do)
  4. Do Tarot readings on Directors and Limiters to determine whether they and the chosen type of spell will achieve the desired outcome
  5. If the Tarot readings are not favorable, revise either Directors and Limiters or spell type or both, then lather, rinse, and repeat until the readings are favorable
  6. Design the spell's necessary ingredients, such as verses, candle carvings, Tarot changes (for Tarot spells), and chosen time to cast spell
  7. Perform Tarot readings on the above ingredients and revise until readings are favorable
  8. Prepare the spell ingredients (i.e., carve the candle or write out steps to Tarot layout changes)
  9. Cast spell at the appropriate time
  10. Perform follow-up Tarot readings at appropriate intervals to determine progress
  11. Make spell adjustments if necessary, up to and including spell take-downs (for spells gone awry)
  12. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the results of your spell!
Whew! That does sound like a bit of work, doesn't it? On the other hand, if you consider that a spell can achieve almost anything you can imagine, then the above-specified level of effort may well be worth it!

In future articles we will take each step in this anatomy of a magic spell and dig in. We will define, explore, explain, and generally give you the gist of each step so that you have an idea of what goes into a solid spell that is not only effective, but also follows the operational laws governing magical practice. So stay tuned!

How to Figure Out If Your Magic Spell Will Work

This may seem like a "Well, duh!" title but you would be surprised at the number of people who write and launch magic spells without first figuring out whether the spell will work. My question to those folks? Why go to all the trouble to do a spell when you don't even know if it will work? It seems like a waste of time and energy.

The good news is that a little divination is all you need to figure out whether your magic spell will be effective. The type of divination you use should depend on the size and complexity of the spell you want to launch. Here are three types of divination that you can use to predict the effectiveness of your spell, listed from simplest to most complex:

1. Pendulum
2. Question Circle
3. Tarot Reading

Pendulum
For simple magic spells, you can use your pendulum to do simple "Yes/No" testing on whether your spell will be effective. You can also use your pendulum with a 1-10 scale and ask it to tell you the level of effectiveness of your spell for solving your problem. To do this, you will need to swing your pendulum over a sheet of paper with 1-10 arranged in a circle. Be sure to be clear whether 10 means least effective or most effective. Ask your pendulum to rate the effectiveness of the spell and then decide whether the spell is worth your effort.

Question Circle
With a question circle you can ask the Winds of the four directions about the effectiveness of your spell. There are a lot of ways to do question circle, but here are the basic steps:
  1. Cleanse the area by smudging or using some other method
  2. Formulate the question you will ask each direction, such as, "How effective will this spell be and what can I do to make it more effective?"
  3. Starting in the east, go to that direction and sit facing the direction. Ask the question out loud and have pen and paper ready to record the results.
Each direction will give you a different kind of answer. The east will give you thoughts, ideas, and ways to improve the lines of communication in your spell. The south will give you action steps and ways to increase the power of your spell. The west will tell you about feelings, emotions, and spiritual insight. The north will offer answers regarding the strength and perseverance of your magic spell. Using these answers you can improve your spell before launching it.

Tarot Reading
For the most complex spells a series of tarot readings always helps you determine the exact effect of your magic spell. Tarot readings, especially 12-card types, will show cause-effect flow lines. You will be able to determine exactly how the spell will work (i.e., which part of your situation will be most affected and how) and how effective it will be. If a cause-effect flow line in the reading shows very little change or a lot of resistance that cannot be overcome, you will need to change your spell to address these issues. Tarot readings are best for single and multiple candle spells that handle many complex issues. I also recommend that you do tarot readings on any symbols, chants, or litanies you are going to use in your spell.

For most spells simple divination will do the trick. A little extra planning and guidance before you launch your spell can save you the hassle of having to take down a good spell that has gone bad and prevent you from wasting your time on a spell that won't work. Good luck!
