Learning Without Struggle

Schools, churches, authority figures, parents and friends influence us in ways we aren't even aware of! One of the main ways that they influence us is by teaching us the old adage, "no pain, no gain." With their help, we have all become quite accustomed to believing that we must experience struggle and pain to succeed or create in this world. This belief is so common that, for most of us, it is the lens through which we view our world – a lens of which we are hardly aware.

Luckily for those of us who are tired of struggling, this Earth School has very flexible rules. In fact, we make our own rules. What does that mean? It means that if you want to learn and create without struggle, you only have to inform the Universe of your decision. If you never want to learn another lesson through pain and struggle, just tell the Universe that you'd like to learn exclusively through pleasing experiences.

We have a friend who, whenever he asks the Universe for help or assistance, tells the Universe to bring him the results in pleasing ways that he can easily understand. And does he struggle? Not much! He lives the most peaceful life we have ever witnessed, and he does it all by choice.

So the next time you ask the Universe for some result or some lesson, add the caveat that you do not wish to struggle or experience pain. Then, get ready to have fun and experience some really wonderful times. Good luck!

Your Reality: Cause or Accident?

Do You Live by Accident or Intention?

Are you the creator of your own reality? You may have read in various esoteric sources that you can be the creator of your own reality. However, just because you CAN be the creator doesn't mean that you ARE. Why?

Because there are two different ways you can live on this planet - you can live under the Law of Accident or the Law of Fate. Most people on this planet live under the Law of Accident, which means that they don't control their reality but are simply bounced from one life event to another like a pinball in a machine. However, there are a select few people who live under the Law of Fate, who understand and use the laws of the Universe to create and shape their own reality. These people create lives of harmony, abundance, peace and joy.

If you do nothing to improve, refine and control your inner life (that is, your thoughts, emotions, etc.) then you are living under the Law of Accident. Life just happens to you. Life is in the driver's seat.

If, on the other hand, you focus on controlling the use of your inner attention you begin to live under the Law of Fate. What does it mean to control your inner attention? It means being very deliberate about the thoughts, moods, words, activities and desires to which you give your attention.

In our society we accept many forms of interaction which distract the attention and cause us to live under the Law of Accident. For instance, consider gossip, TV, negative thoughts, commiseration, fear, negative emotions, newspapers, world events and so forth. Almost everyone indulges in these activities so we don't think twice about them. But would you consider not doing them if it would mean the difference between creating a life of peace, harmony and abundance or living under the Law of Accident (in which lots of accidents occur)? Hmmmm….food for thought. Happy considering!

Five Steps You Can Take to Create Your Own Reality

1) Accept on a trial basis that you can create everything in your reality. You will experiment with this hypothesis to see if it is true in your own life.

2) Decide on something you want to create - prosperity, a harmonious relationship, the achievement of some goal. NOTE: Start with something small. For instance, if you choose prosperity, choose to have enough money to pay your bills next month instead of lifetime prosperity.

3) Choose that your creation be reality. You can either speak it aloud or say it silently inside. For instance, you might say, "I choose to have enough money to pay all my bills in the month of June."

4) Relax internally. Rest inside yourself in the knowing that what you have chosen is already happening.

5) Think, feel and act as if that which you have chosen has already manifested. Resist worrying or fretting about it. Do what you need to do on the material level to achieve the goal, but leave it alone internally. When you find yourself thinking, worrying or wondering about your aim, do whatever is necessary to distract your mind and emotions from it. The more superbly you can live in the assurance that your goal is already manifesting, the easier it will manifest. This is the step where you begin to deliberately control that which you give your attention to. This is the step where you GET OUT OF THE WAY!!

Being in Silence to Receive

We often teach students how to dowse, do divination, and gain information through non-physical means--in other words, receive information from the Universe. If you have practiced any of these arts, or simply ever asked for information from the Universe, you know that you need to be in a receiving mode before you can hear what the Universe has to say.

The Universe always delivers what we ask for, but we sometimes forget to listen. In fact, in the midst of our busy noisy lives, it's amazing that we're able to hear anything at all! Between cell phones, pagers, television, and radio, we're buried in a cacophony of physical sounds, which tends to shut down our ability to hear our inner voices of guidance.

How You Can Hear Universal Messages?
So how can you increase and develop your ability to hear the Universe and its messages? Practice inner and outer silence. Outer silence is perhaps the easier of the two to achieve. Just pick a segment of the day, say 2 hours, and choose to be silent during that period. It's best if you can choose an active part of the day, such as mid-morning or mid-afternoon. You might have to do this exercise on a weekend or during a holiday, when you won't be forced to interact with anyone at work or school. Maintain outer silence by not speaking. It's also best if you avoid taking in too much noise from other sources, such as radio or television. You can sit quietly, meditate, read something uplifting, or even do chores. The goal here is to actively listen or watch for messages from the Universe.

Outer versus Inner Silence
If you can't maintain outer silence during your day, you can work on inner silence instead. Inner silence means quieting the internal mind chatter that is with us almost all the time. As you're walking around, for instance, notice how many thoughts cross your mind, triggered by the things you see and hear. Then, start quieting that stream of thought by putting your attention on your breathing or some physical sensation, such as the sensation of your feet striking the ground. Whenever a thought comes up, just return your attention to the physical sensation. If you work consistently with this exercise, you'll soon be able quiet your internal chatter quickly and listen to your inner voice of guidance.

As you work on both inner and outer silence, you'll notice that one begins to affect the other. As you get more and more silent outside, you'll become more silent inside, and vice versa. Enjoy!

Shrink Your Limitations Magically

According to a number of esoteric texts and spiritual guides (including one of our favorites, Paxton Robey), Earth is a school. More importantly, Earth is a fairly rugged and difficult school designed to help beings learn life and spiritual lessons very quickly!

As you've probably noticed, one of the most frequently used teaching techniques in our Earth school is limitation. Most of us seem to experience limitation of one sort or another in one of the three basic areas: health, money/career, or love/relationships. Some of us don't have enough money while others don't have enough love. Some are limited in career growth, and still others lack health. And some of us find lack in all three areas at once!

How to Deal with Limitation Magically
So what can we do about our limitations? How can we learn from them and move on to a life of greater freedom? Magically, we can turn to the Law of Octaves to help us shrink our limitations. The Law of Octaves says that anything that exists does so on one of many octaves. Some octaves are huge (on the scale of solar systems) and others are tiny (on the scale of our personal lives).

We can use the Law of Octaves to shrink our limitations by moving them to smaller octaves that occupy less space in our lives. For instance, suppose you have difficulty finishing projects in your life – you seem to flit from project to project never completing a single one. You've probably tried all kinds of ways to motivate yourself to finish these projects with little success. The whole situation can seem daunting. But you can use the Law of Octaves to bring your limitation down to a smaller scale where you can more easily deal with it.

Start Small
One way would be to find a tiny area of your life where you have trouble with completion and seek to correct the problem there. You may, for example, be careless about screwing caps onto bottles all the way or you might forget to check whether you turned off the stove after cooking dinner. Find just one little area that represents the larger problem on a smaller scale. Then, focus all of your attention on being conscious in that smaller octave. Take the time to screw the lids onto jars or to check the stove after cooking dinner. You'll be surprised at how dealing with your limitation on this smaller scale will apply the correction to the big areas of your life.

Be creative in how you apply the Law of Octaves and have fun with it! If you find that you're too inflexible in life, don't try to correct the problem changing everything at once. Try, for instance, to shrink to octave down to one joint in your body. If you can make your hand or wrist more flexible, then you'll become more flexible in life. Or you could become more flexible in your choice of music by listening to a new radio station every day on your way to work (for just five minutes if nothing else). It's whatever works for you as long as you confine and work on your area of limitation on a teeny-tiny octave. Enjoy!

Finding East to Get Back on Track, Magically

If you ever feel like you've strayed from your path and you're not quite sure which way to go, just find east! While most compasses want to find north, for shamans and magicians east is the more powerful cardinal direction for finding knowledge and guidance.

East is the direction of knowledge, understanding and enlightenment; it's the direction of the Sun and the place where all life begins. When you're feeling lost, you can ask the Winds of the East for guidance, pray to the east, or just meditate facing east.

One of our favorite exercises is to practice finding east psychically:
  1. Find some open space outside and stand quietly for a few moments.
  2. Close your eyes and slowly spin around a few times.
  3. Raise your arm parallel with the ground and point the index finger of your dominant hand (the hand with which you normally point).
  4. Keeping your arm raised, slowly spin around until you feel yourself facing east. Some people feel "locked in" when they face east and others just feel a desire to stop turning.
  5. Open your eyes to verify whether you are facing east.

Don't worry about whether you actually find east on your first few tries. Your sense of east will develop with practice. It's often the practice of finding east that yields more benefit than actually pointing to it.

We've also found that when we're "locked on" to our path in life, finding east is easier, and when we're lost it's harder. This simple exercise can be an internal compass that tells you how closely you've stuck to your path. Enjoy!

What Winston Churchill Would Say About Magic - Never Give Up!

Never Give Up!
Winston Churchill was once asked to give a speech at a commencement ceremony at Eton. Many important people gave long speeches that day, and one person gave a 20 minute introduction for Churchill. All were hushed in anticipation of what Churchill might say.

Churchill stood up and gave a 9 word commencement speech: "Never give up. Never give up. Never, never, never." Then he sat down. Wow!

Winston Churchill's Words as Applied to Magic
Those 9 words epitomize the true spirit of the esoteric researcher. No one could have said it better. If Winston Churchill were to talk about magic, I bet that's what he would say.

The people who are able to really create magic in their lives and who are true explorers of the art and science of magic never give up. They are bold, persistent and completely dedicated to understanding the universal principles that make this Earth school tick.

Are You Just Trying to Solve a Problem?
You see, most people come into the study of magic or shamanism as a way to solve some immediate problem, whether it is prosperity, relationships, health, career, or success. Once they find some sort of solution to their immediate problem, they stop learning and growing in life - that is, until the next problem crops up. And, the next problem always will crop up. Why? Because they have not truly changed their understanding or consciousness about life or their birth vision.

That's what magical researchers do - they really try to understand, through their own observation and experience, how it all works. This study begins to fascinate them far more than whatever immediate problem drew them into magic in the first place. And that's when the magic really begins to happen.

When you get far more interested in the way this Universe works than in the particular problem at hand, you'll find that the problems in your life begin to shrink and disappear. That's the real magic of it.

Magical Research as the Real Cure for Life Problems
If you really want to "cure" or "fix" your life problems, pursue the study of magic to depths beyond anything you could imagine. If you never give up on magic, it will never give up on you. Learning and practicing this art as a way of life brings you closer to powerful, positive Universal forces. Really.

Ready to dig deep? Journey far? Plumb your magical depths? I have two words for you:

Basic Magic

When the Magic Is Not Working: Go Fly a Kite

You've hired some angels. You've launched a spell. You've made some sacred space. You've talked to the powers that be. In short, you've done everything in your power to bring magic to bear on something specific in your life ... and nothing is happening. What now?

Go fly a kite.

Or, if you don't like kites, take a hike. Ride a bike. Fish for pike. Sing into a mike. Stick your finger into a dike. Take a drive on the turnpike. OK, so maybe I'm getting carried away here (I'm often heavily influenced by the rhyming of spell chants), but you get the point.

Magical Delays
If the magic doesn't seem to be working for you, go do something else for a while. This might be counter-intuitive, but it really works. We get emails from students and strangers all the time, asking us what to do when the magic isn't working (or isn't working fast enough) and we often tell them to fly a kite.

Here's the thing. Magic always works. What delays the magic? Us. When we get worried, angry, depressed, and negative, the magic slows way down. As the teacher Abraham-Hicks is fond of saying, "You cannot have a happy ending to an unhappy journey." If you feel negative, then you're on an unhappy journey, and you can't have a happy magical ending.

The Prime Directive: A Giant Stop Sign
The reason magical beings can't deliver the result you want when you feel negative is because of the Prime Directive. Just like on Star Trek, the Prime Directive says that other beings can't interfere in your life. If you have asked for something magical to happen in your life, but then you doubt that it will happen, your intention rules supreme. Your doubt serves as a giant stop sign to angels and other helpers. They can't override your dominant intention of doubt.

But once your attention shifts into neutral, magical beings can once again deliver the magic into your life. You don't even have to be positive. You just have to not be negative. That's why flying a kite helps. It takes your mind off the "problem," which switches your attention to neutral. When you return from flying a kite, voila! Some magic will probably have taken place.

So do something, anything, to keep yourself busy while the magic happens. Stop getting in the way and the magic will appear. Do something "in the meantime." Your angels will thank you!

Is Your Magic Wand Bent?

After using your magic wand, do you experience any of these symptoms?

- dizziness
- watery eyes
- rituals gone awry
- crooked magical shielding

These are just a few of the things that can go wrong when you use a magic wand. More specifically, this is what can happen if you use a wand that is not very straight. In other words, a bent magic wand.

What's Up With a Bent Wand?
How do you end up with a bent magic wand? It's really no mystery. The magic wand, being a tool of the element Air, is usually made out of wood, usually a lightweight and light-colored wood, such as white pine, birch, peeled willow, aspen or yucca-stalk. The wood for a wand is usually a limb cut from a live tree.

If you happen to select a limb that's got a few too many twists and bends in it, then you end up with a crooked wand. For instance, cutting a wand from a corkscrew willow (pictured here) will bring you nothing but trouble. You need to start with a tree with relatively straight limbs. Sometimes it can be difficult to tell whether a limb is straight enough to use a wand, since you usually don't use the entire length of the limb. You just need a straight piece of wood that measures from your elbow to the end of your middle finger. So sometimes even a bent limb will work as long as you can cut a straight piece from it.

Some magical practitioners work well with wands that are slightly bent. The way you know whether your wand is too bent is by trying it out. If you experience any of the symptoms listed above, your wand is probably too far bent. In these cases, it is best to find a new limb and make a new wand.

Why Bent Wands Don't Work
The reason bent wands don't work is because they don't direct energy in a straight line. For instance, if you try to put up an energetic shield using a bent wand, chances are the lines that form your shield will be crooked. A crooked omnil, or circular personal shield, will make you feel dizzy. A psychic message sent with a bent wand won't reach its intended target. Ditto for any healing work you do with a crooked wand.

Tip: If you wand rituals, shields, and healing work have been a little "off" lately, check the straightness of your wand. You may need to make a new one.

Goosey, Goosey, Gander - A Magic Spell, Not Just a Nursery Rhyme

Nursery Rhymes as Magic Spells

When our magic students have difficulty writing verses for litanies, chants, or spells, we often tell them to read through children's nursery rhymes. For one thing, nursery rhymes have good meter and rhythm. They also rhyme, which can be important for giving spell verses the proper force.

Another reason we have students refer to nursery rhymes is that many of these rhymes were actually the verses for spells, way back when. No kidding. For instance, nursery rhymes, such as "Jack and Jill" or "London Bridge," were actually spell verses designed for very specific purposes.

Goosey, Goosey, Gander
Here's one that always amazes me. Did you know that the "Goosey, Goosey, Gander" rhyme was originally written to program an energy matrix that looked like a goose to follow certain people around the castle? In other words, the spell created an apparition that looked like a goose that would follow people around. In magical terminology, the goose was a "watcher."

It takes a lot of energy to program a watcher as large and complex as goose, but it can be done. Most of the time, magical practitioners program much smaller versions, such as flies or bugs. Flies are small and unobtrusive, which makes them the perfect watchers. Most people don't pay much attention to them.

What To Do With Watchers
How do you know if you have a spell matrix watcher following you around your house? If the watcher takes the form of a fly, it may look like a fly but it won't act like one. Flies buzz around randomly, with unpredictable flight paths. A watcher fly, in contrast, will fly in straight lines, and will "follow" you in a way that a fly won't. A real fly will buzz around and bother you, but it won't track you in a directed way. A watcher will.

What do you do if you find a watcher? Smack it, just like you would a regular fly. No worries!

The Levels of Magical Knowledge

Most esoteric teachings divide knowledge into several different levels. It’s important to differentiate between these levels of knowledge since a magician or shaman must know what kind of knowledge is trustworthy and what is not.

In the ordinary world, almost anything can be categorized as knowledge, including what you read, what you hear from other people and what the experts tell you. Magically, true knowledge is quite different. Here are different levels:

IGNORANCE:
You do not know about the existence of something.

KNOWLEDGE OF: You have heard of the existence of something but don’t know anything about it.

KNOWLEDGE ABOUT: You have heard other people or sources talk about something. This is also commonly called hearsay.

KNOWLEDGE: You have directly observed or experienced something. Magicians and shamans consider this true knowledge.

KNOWING: Information you receive through your spirit senses which you may or may not be able to validate through your physical senses.

Most esoteric practitioners consider only knowledge and knowing to be trustworthy sources of information – everything else is open to question. Because magicians and shamans are the researchers of the metaphysical world, their job is to verify everything they read or hear about through actual observation and experience.

Why are these levels of knowledge important? Because when you’re traveling out of body or working with high level magical techniques that could have serious consequences you’d better be sure of your knowledge. The Universe judges you on what you do, not what you meant to do (based on faulty information).

In daily life if you choose to only put your faith in knowledge and knowing you will find that your life becomes much more harmonious. Why? Because most of our daily problems arise from trusting information that we only know of or know about. If you validate what you believe through actual experience and observation you won’t fall into the usual societal traps. Good luck!

How Do You Know if Your Magical Healing Worked?

Magical healing is one area of magic and shamanic practice that can be truly tricky. Suppose you perform a magical healing ritual on someone or do a remote healing. The person gets better and you feel great.

But then the doubt creeps in. You begin wondering whether you were responsible for the healing or if the person was going to get better anyway. Or maybe your healing and the person's recovery were just coincidental-they just happened to occur at the same time. Or perhaps the person's angels and guides stepped in and performed the healing, and your magic had nothing to do with the person's recovery.

That kind of self-doubt most assuredly will drive you crazy and interfere with your ability to effectively practice magic. When it comes to practicing any kind of magic, here's one rule that will help you keep self-doubt out of the picture:

Never allow your magic to be tested.

People who don't believe in magic will commonly challenge magic practitioners to "prove" their magic by passing certain tests. This does nothing but introduce self-doubt into your practice. This rule applies to you as well. Don't try to "test" your own magical abilities or trying to figure out if you really healed someone.

The best position to take when it comes to magical healing is realize that you doing magic for your benefit and for the benefit of others, should they choose to make use of it. According to master dowser Harold McCoy, who has assisted in many miraculous healings, we are not and cannot be the sole instruments of remote healing. Healing is usually a combined effort between healer, client, and higher beings. If any part of this equation is missing, such as when the client refuses healing energy, healing will not occur. At the same time, when healing does occur, no single party in the equation is responsible. Instead, it's a group effort.

As Harold himself puts it, "I just do these things and the person gets better. I don't know that there is any connection, or what that may be, but it doesn't matter!" This is a failsafe position for magical healing. You know there is a connection between your magical act and the healing, but you don't have to know the exact nature of the connection. This lets you off the hook when it comes to self-doubt.

Need More Magical Healing Help?
Check out Harold's seven principles for magical healing work:

1. Never turn anyone down.
2. Be always 100% committed.
3. Always get permission.
4. Always invoke your guides and angels.
5. Don't charge, but accept donations.
6. There are no failures.
7. We don't diagnose nor cure.

What else would help you in your magical healing work?

Magic: Why Bad Effects Are Almost as Good as Good Effects

Why Bad is Sometimes Good

Sometimes the people who "have the worst luck" are in the best place to use magic to the greatest effect. It's odd, but people who always seem to have a black cloud hanging over their heads are more magically powerful than the people who have smooth-running lives with very few problems.

The reason people who appear to have "bad luck" are inherently more powerful magicians than people with average luck is because the bad luck people already know how to create an effect in the world.

Think about it. There are many ways to measure a person's magical ability, and one measure of magical power is how strong an effect the person creates in the world. People with bad luck often wreak a path of destruction wherever they go. They create a lot of effect. Their effect isn't, per se, "good," but it is strong.

Having said that, people who create a strong negative effect in the world also tend to have trouble using their magical abilities. In other words, if they had learned to channel their abilities they wouldn't be living under such a black cloud. But, when and if they ever do learn to channel their abilities to create effects they actually wanted, they are fairly unstoppable.

Good News About Bad Magical Effects

1. If you are a person chronically living under a black cloud, you have powerful magic. You just haven't learned how to use it.

2. If you living a good life with no black cloud, it doesn't mean you can't develop your magical abilities, but you may not need them if life is good.

Powerful magical practitioners tend to be fairly extreme in some ways. You will rarely find a practicing magician, good at the craft, who has a milk toast personality.

The $64,000 Question
Now for the $64,000 question. If you are one of those black cloud people, how do you channel your power so that it produces useful rather than chaotic effects in your life? The answer is that you have to start small. If you are one of these people, you probably have a strong will and a strong personality. Going head-to-head against that personality won't do anything but you give a flatter head.

Instead, start using your abilities in areas where you don't have a lot of significance, where things don't matter so much. Start attracting little things into your life. For instance, every morning when you wake up, think of something insignificant you want to bring into your life. Pick anything that doesn't matter, ranging from jello to the color green to a poker chip. Spend a minute or two calling that item to you, whether you speak a little prayer out loud or you envision it showing up. Then, during your day, look for it to come to you. Wait for it. Expect it. When you get it, celebrate. If it doesn't show up, either you didn't recognize it or it didn't happen to come. No big deal. That's why you pick something that doesn't matter to you.

As your ability to bring small items into your life improves, your ability to channel your magical power will, too. As long as you stick with things that don't matter to you, you'll keep the energy light and joyful. If you find yourself "caring" too much about whether you succeed with this exercise, move on to a different exercise, like some baby steps.

As Cold as a Witch's Tit -- Really Cold or Just a Myth?

Being involved in the practice of magic and shamanism, I'm always interested in the origin of symbols, rituals, words, and phrases. For instance, did you know that until Eliphas Levi came along, the word 'magick' was always spelled without the letter 'k'? Levi added the extra 'k' to differentiate religious and ceremonial magick from stage magic. Now it's spelled either way.

Another phrase that has always interested me is this one: "Cold as a witch's tit."

I've always wondered, are they really cold? Not as far as I can tell.

But in the interests of fun and humor, I checked it out. This link has an explanation that makes sense.

According to this source:

"Since a witch is in league with Satan, presumably she has no maternal feelings. Thus the medium by which she would suckle a child is, well, cold as a witch's tit."

More explanation follows on that website. Here's a link to some humor about witch's tits, too.

Enjoy the fun in magic!

Henbane Flower Essence: The Witch's Flower Essence

Supposedly part of the witch's 'flying broom' potion, henbane has long been part of the magical practitioner's apothecary. The plant itself is quite poisonous, containing scopolamine, atropine, and hyoscyamine, and is in the same family as other magical plants like deadly nightshade, mandrake, and datura. Many practitioners avoid henbane because of its deadly properties, but it can be a most useful plant when prepared and used correctly.

While the plant itself requires great caution for use, the flower essence made from henbane is an excellent tonic for shamans, witches, and other magical practitioners. The flower essence can be used without fear of poisoning, and is particularly good for vision quests and practitioners involved in exploring death. This can refer to physical death, or a more spiritual death, such as the death of personality or the ego. For those undergoing extreme life transitions, henbane can be supportive in helping avoid frustration and anger. It has a more extreme effect than other "transition" flower essences like Walnut or Bottlebrush.

Henbane is particularly useful for shamans investigating the half worlds through scrying, the black mirror, and other spiritual "windows." Henbane flower essence also helps those who want to connect with the spirits of the dead.

The Magic of the Long Moment

Time travel, or the manipulation of time, has long been a shaman's tool for healing or research. For instance, a shaman might take a person back into a past life event so that person can understand what happened, or a shaman might travel into the future to explore possible what-ifs. For shamans and magicians time is elastic: it can be stretched like taffy, compressed like cotton, or frozen like ice.

One of the simplest ways to begin playing with time magically is to practice the art of the long moment. The art of the long moment is simply the ability to slow our perception of certain events so that we can really see what is happening in present time. It's also called the Cortothalamic Pause. Why do we need such a pause? Because we normally rush headlong through life events at the speed of sound, which doesn't give us optimum time to respond appropriately.

3 Steps to Instant Reaction
Here's the 3 step process that normally happens in any life event:
  1. We receive an incoming perception: A person speaks loudly to us
  2. The perception is immediately routed by our flow of associations to a certain place in our memory: In this or a past life, we have memories of loud voices and anger.
  3. The perception is assigned a meaning: The person is angry with us.
These three steps happen in less than a second. Less than one second after we receive an incoming impression, we have assigned a meaning to the perception and are already beginning to react. We will assume that the person is angry with us regardless of what the person is actually feeling.

In the regular course of things, our time is compressed in this way. There's no time to really evaluate the incoming perception and respond appropriately. Do you ever overreact in the heat of the moment and wonder why? It's because you had no Cortothalamic Pause. You reacted based on memory. In other words, most of us are interacting with life using mechanical reactions from memory -- we are hardly ever in the "now."

The Magic of the Long Moment
This is where the long moment comes in. If you can slow yourself at the moment you receive an incoming piece of data then you can stretch time. In this long moment you give yourself the power to evaluate the information you have received and give a true response.

How can you practice the art of the long moment? It's not hard. Twice a day practice the Cortothalamic Pause. When someone asks you a question or asks you to do something, stop everything inside yourself for 2 seconds. Stop all thought and consideration. Get quiet. Then respond to the person. For a long time you won't actually be able to stop your internal thoughts, but you will be able to see all the mechanical reactions and thoughts that immediately spring up. You'll be truly surprised at the massive and often chaotic activity that happens inside yourself. It will give you true insight into the way you interact with life.

Flower Essences for the Long Moment
To enhance the probability of having a long moment, you can include these flower essences as part of your daily regimen:

- Lavender and Chamomile for calming
- White Chestnut for reducing repetitive thoughts
- Thyme for helping to manipulate Time

5 Magical Methods to Prevent Nightmares

If you suffer from nightmares and can't sleep at night because of them, you may need someone to wave a magic wand! Actually, you might just need to do a little shopping for some magical supplies. Here are five simple and wonderful magical methods to help you prevent nightmares. They are a big part of many tribal traditions and have worked for many suffering sleepless nights because of nightmares.

1. Sun Candle
Light a sun yellow candle (bright yellow with no orange or red overtones) with a paper or wooden match when you are ready to go to bed. A sun yellow candle encased in glass and set on a plate is your safest option. Let the candle burn all night, if necessary. Sun yellow nourishes your Spirit and keeps your energetic vibrations high and light while you sleep.

2. Essential Oils
Before bed, add a drop of soothing essential oils to your pillowcase or sheets, or rub them (mixed with a carrier oil, like almond oil) on the bottoms of your feet, on your neck, or on your forehead. If you have a partner, trade essential oil foot rubs before bed. Calming and soothing essential oils that will help prevent nightmares include lavender, orange, rose, sandalwood, and frankincense.

3. Dreamcatchers
Native Americans have long used dreamcatchers to prevent nightmares from intruding during the night. Made of leather and sinew, and often decorated with feathers, shells, stones, and symbols, dreamcatchers should be hung at the head of your bed or over your bed. They will "catch" nightmares, stopping them before they reach you.

4. Flower Essences
Mix up some flower essences to take during the day and before bed to prevent nightmares. Rock Rose is excellent for terrors, such as those that often appear in nightmares. Aspen helps young children who suffer from nightmares. Mugwort helps keep dreams from interrupting your sleep, while White Chestnut works well for repetitive dreams that haunt. Star of Bethlehem is a great overall flower essence to ease fears and terrors.

5. Glass of Water
Water is the element of the Spirit, and works well to soak up the terrors of the Spirit as well. A simple remedy for nightmares is simply to place a full glass of water on your nightstand before bed. The water will absorb any negative spiritual energy during the night, and helps prevent nightmares for some people. In the morning, be sure to dump the water down the drain. You don't want to take in negative energy by drinking the water!

Is Real Magic Black, White or Something Else Altogether?

If you go to Google or Yahoo and type in the word "magick," you'll get a lot of listings for black magick, white magick, chaos magick, sex magick and thousands of other kinds of magick. And if you type in the word "magic," you'll get something entirely different. So what is magic (or magick)? Is real magic black, white or something else altogether?

In the experience of most magicians with some level of training, magic is neither black nor white, good nor evil. Instead, magic an unchanging set of operating principles that are in effect whether the you know them or not. Magical laws are like physical laws - they are impersonal, fixed and completely immune to bargaining.

One of our favorite authors, Paxton Robey, explains it so well in his book "No Time for Karma." He says, "The Universe and its rules must be seen as impersonal principle if we are to become self empowered beings. Remember the law of gravity. When you jump out of the window, you will go down. On the way you, you might remember about gravity, but the earth will not care one way or the other. Gravity is impersonal so it will not say, 'She is a pretty good person so maybe we should let her down easy.'" While the idea of impersonal magical forces can seem cold and unfeeling, the good thing about it is that it's very, very reliable. You'll never go to make use of magical principle and find that it's no longer there.

What Makes Magic Black or White?
What makes magic so-called "black" or "white" is our intent. Remember that magic is the study of intention. Our intention and attention are what direct the forces of magic in one direction or another. So what do you do when you stumble on a website offering black, white, chaos or sex magic? Use your own experience and observation to decide if whatever they are offering is really right for you. All types of magic are valid. What's right for you depends on your goals as a magician.

In reality, all forms of magic are just specializations in the same field. Magic is such as vast area of study that every particular branch is just a focused shot in the dark, trying to find out more about this area or that. Voodoo magic is about using the law, "as above, so below" to create effects in the world. What you do to a voodoo doll (as above), you likewise do to the person the doll represents (so below). Chaos magic is about using extreme methods to create heightened states of awareness and consciousness. Love magic is often attracting the right person to you.

Magical Side-Bands
And that brings up another interesting point. Above, we said that all forms of magic are valid. They are. But some have "sidebands" or side effects that you might not want in your life. For instance, if you cast a love spell that's supposed to make another person love you, you are binding that person. Binding is a magical problem that causes a backlash. You see, the Universe operates on the principle of reciprocal maintenance, which means that whatever you do to others will also happen to you. So if you bind another person with a love spell, you can be sure that you'll find your own freedom bound in some way, against your will.

Got it? Good! Check out Rules of the Road, a list of cosmic governing laws put together by George Dew of Church of Seven Arrows. It provides some good rules of thumb when you're trying to decide whether one form or magic or another would be fun to play with.

Awaken Your Native Wisdom by Hiring an Angel

Awaken Your Native Wisdom by Hiring an Angel

What do you get when you cross an obsession with self-improvement with an expert culture? People obsessed with expert opinions - and people who have lost their native wisdom! As a society we have become so accustomed to seeking expert opinions that we no longer know how to access our own intuition and knowing.

In ancient tribal times people didn't run to the medicine man or shaman for every ailment or life problem - they had spiritual tools for solving their own problems. They knew how to handle elemental energies of air, fire, water and earth to create healing, abundance, harmony in relationships and much more. They knew how to work with weather spirits, devas and other beings in the hierarchy. And they used their inner wisdom and guidance to make both everyday and major decisions.

The good news is that you have that very same wisdom and connection to higher powers and beings - all you have to do is awaken it. How? With practice, of course! No, we can't tell you how to do the equivalent of spiritual jumping jacks but we can give you exercises that will help you develop and exercise your spirit abilities.

Hire a Parking Angel
Ready to stop snoozing and start using your native wisdom? Try this little exercise of hiring a Parking Angel to help you find a parking spot in a busy lot.

1. Say out loud or in your mind, "I would like to a request a parking angel of sun yellow, grass green, and powder blue."

2. Wait a few moments until you feel a presence, or, if just wait a few moments. They don't take long to get there.

3. Say, "Parking angel of sun yellow, grass green, and powder blue, I would like to request your help in getting me a parking spot [specify where and when]. Thank you in advance for your help." When you receive that which you have asked for, then thank the angel again. It is VERY IMPORTANT to thank angels so they will be willing to help you later.

There are angels for EVERYTHING, from dealing with particular people to telling you how much salt to put on your food. You can ask their help in absolutely anything. Part of their job is to help us - they can't move on to the next level of their evolution unless they help us, and they can't help us unless we ask for help. So there are groups of angels just waiting, begging, for us to ask

Fun, right? Also, check out Everyday Magic, a weekly email course that offers you simple ways to awaken all of your magical, psychic and shamanic abilities!

The Magic of Great Endings

In our society we tend to celebrate new beginnings and fresh starts. We are a self-improvement culture, and it seems like anytime is a great time for a New Year's resolution. What we don't seem to focus on, however, is creating a great ending before we start a fresh beginning.

There is an esoteric principle that states that every act of power has a chosen beginning, duration, and ending. Most of us are great at choosing a beginning and planning all the steps in the duration, but we never end our acts. And because we never end our acts, any new beginnings are inevitably mired down in previous unfinished acts. That's why we seem to get bogged down in our creations - they are hindered by all our other attempts to create!

What does a great ending look like? A great ending is the act of stepping back from the events in which you've been engaged and taking a long look at what you've done. Take a long view of what has been accomplished, feel the distance between the beginning of the endeavor and now. Feel the weight of what has been achieved. Appreciate all that has gone into creating the final product. Appreciate your own efforts, and those of others who have contributed. Then, let it go. Release your creation to have a life and independent will of its own. Only when we let go of something completely have we fully created anything.

For instance, suppose you've planned your daughter's wedding. Perhaps the creation started with the announcement of the engagement. Then, the duration of the endeavor was filled with planning, meetings with caterers, bakers, ministers and musicians. The big day arrives, along with hundreds of guests. The ceremony and celebration proceed according to plan (or not according to plan) and, finally, your daughter and her new husband depart on their honeymoon. You sit in the reception hall as the last people leave the party. Now, or the following morning, would be a good time to end this act of power. As the band gathers up its things, look back over the entire process. Feel how it felt at the beginning of the process, relive the events that happened in between from where you stand now. Look at what has been achieved, and appreciate all that has come to pass. Then, release your daughter and her husband to freedom, to their own free will and the development of their marriage as they see fit. Appreciate all that you have done and let it go. This is a great ending.

So if you want to begin anything in your life, magical or ordinary, make sure you have cleared a space for this new creation by taking the time to end all that has been. What if you haven't quite finished the previous event, but are no longer interested in it? For instance, say you started to get a degree in engineering, but now decide you want to go to Hollywood to be an actor? No problem. You don't have to finish something to end it. Simply appreciate all you have gained, all the effort you have put forth into the previous endeavor, and let it go. Let there be a gap of at least a day between your ending and a new beginning. Let that day be a sort of "limbo," a space of transition or transformation, a breath of air. Then, begin anew.

Before you make a fresh start, make sure you've made a great end. You must end before you can begin. Here's to great endings!
