The Magical Secret to Living Life on Your Own Terms

Ought, should, must, need ... ick! All those words define our lives in terms of the things we have to do. There's not a whole lot of choice in those words, right? And how much of our unhappiness with our lives stems from a feeling of limitation or lack of freedom? We have to get up at a certain time in the morning to make it to work on time. We have to do as our boss says. We have to pick up the kids after school by a certain time. We have to maintain appearances. We have to pay bills.

There are so many things in our lives that we can't control it can sometimes feel as though we are living in a box. So what can we do magically to bring more freedom into our lives? How can we live life on our own terms rather than on life's terms?

Living Life on Your Own Terms, Magically
Simple. Make a practice of doing something everyday that life doesn't make you do. Pick something, anything, that you don't have to do and do it everyday. It can be anything. Learn three words in a foreign language every day. Get up 20 minutes earlier everyday and do absolutely nothing. Read two pages in a novel. Learn yoga. Take up underwater basket-weaving. Whatever! The point is to everyday exercise a level of freedom that is outside the "oughts" and "shoulds" of life. It is an exercise in personal choice and personal freedom.

Now why is this important? It's important because it exercises your freedom muscle. This exercise teaches you, over time and day by day, that you are not totally limited by the demands of life, that you do have choice in your life. As time goes on, if you are truly dedicated and consistent in this exercise, you will find that your beliefs about life will change.

The Freedom Exercise
You might think at this point in time that you have to work hard to succeed in life. Practice the freedom exercise for a while and see what happens to that belief. Over time you may come to find that you don't want to work hard to succeed in life, and that you don't have to either.

We live the lives that we believe we have to live. If your beliefs change so will your life, and this little exercise is designed to peck away at those beliefs, to melt them away over time, until you can live your life on your own terms. You didn't come to planet Earth to play life by someone else's rules. You came to make up your own rules. So start today by making your own game of life. Just do one thing every day that life doesn't make you do and revel in the freedom of it, even if it means making an extra effort at first. The freedom that results will be well worth the initial price you pay. Try it, you'll see!

Daily Rituals as a Doorway to the Higher

If you have a longing to connect with something higher, whether it be your higher self or higher powers and beings, one of the simplest ways to connect is by creating a daily ritual for yourself. Whether you meditate, do yoga, read inspirational books, or just take a walk, doing a daily ritual creates a doorway through which the higher can enter your life.

Most of us are so busy during the day that we have a hard time hearing that quiet, dry voice of higher guidance. Whether we know it or not, our guides, totems, angels, and higher selves are speaking to us all the time-most of the time we just can't hear them over all the noise of cell phones, radio, teleconferences, and gossip. So, we need to set aside some sacred time to connect, and daily rituals are perfect for that.

The Walking Ritual
If you've already got a daily ritual that you use, you're one step ahead. Just make sure and do that ritual with as much consistency as possible. In spiritual circles, people have discovered that the consistency of doing a ritual at the same time every time increases the level and quality of the connection with the higher. If you don't already have a ritual, you can try meditation or you can try this simple walking ritual:

1) Decide what amount of time or what distance you want to walk each day (you can adjust this later).

2) The first half of the walk, you get to talk. Talk to your guides, your totems, your angels or the Universe in general. Talk about what's on your mind, or what's going on in your life, or what you want or need. Talk about anything that's important to you or that you need help with.

3) The second half of the walk, you get to listen. Take in everything your guides or the Universe is trying to express to you. Feel your feelings, feel the sensations in your body, hear the sounds around you, smell the smells, and take in the sights. Become an instrument of listening and absorbing.

If you take this walk daily at about the same time every day, you will have established a consistent connection with the higher. In other words, it's a scheduled appointment between you and your higher helpers. It's a time when you can truly connect, listen and be heard. Your life will increase in richness, depth, and understanding. This and other daily rituals will become like a maypole around which your life revolves with steadiness and strength. Enjoy!

Accepting the Here and Now

One of the questions we get most often in our email inbox is, "How do I create what I want in life?" We get reams of email from people who feel stuck in life, who feel like they are standing still rather than moving toward their preferred future. They want to know why they are stuck treading water-and how to get unstuck.

The Answer: Part I
The answer to this question comes in two parts. First, why do we get stuck on a certain square in our life, unable to get going? Inevitably we get stuck because we don't accept where we are in the here and now. Think about it.

If you don't like certain aspects of your life situation very much, what happens when you think about your life? You either get a deep sense of dissatisfaction when you ponder what you don't like or you try to avoid thinking about those unfavorable aspects. Both dislike and avoidance will keep you stuck in the same life situation forever because both are negative emotions that don't possess a high enough vibration to attract what you really want in life.

If you stop to really think about it, when hate where you stand in life, you are fighting a war with yourself. One part of you understands where you stand. The other part hates where you stand. Until you can bring the two together-that is, until you can stop fighting your internal war-you can't move off your square. So how do you stop the war?

The Answer: Part II
That brings us to the second part of the answer, which is simple. If you want to stop the war and get off your square, simply accept where you are here and now. Look at your life situation, warts and all, and accept that this is where you stand at this moment in time and space. Don't judge it, don't fight it, just accept it.

Now why is this so difficult to do? Acceptance of a less-than-desirable life situation is difficult because we live in a progress-oriented society. We are taught that to keep moving forward and always keep our eyes on our dream. But unfortunately we can't ever reach our dreams unless we first acknowledge the starting line, the place where we currently stand. The journey to our dreams is a path from here and now to there and then. To start the journey, we have to accept where we stand today. Until we feel comfortable with our current life situation, we will always be fighting an internal battle with a script that keeps saying something like, "You should be further along in life by now."

Practice Enjoying the Here and Now
So stop the tape and practice accepting your life as it is today. In fact, go even further and practice enjoying your life. Realize that your "responsibility" in life is not to reach your goals today. Today your primary responsibility is to accept where you are.

Note that acceptance is different from tolerance. Tolerance means bearing your life but not liking it. Acceptance means seeing and not disliking any part of your life, even enjoying every part of your life.

Sound too difficult? Then just start with a single aspect of your life that you either avoid or dislike. Try to see it with new eyes. Find something good about it, anything. Tomorrow, find something else good or at least neutral about it. Keep going until that part of your life becomes acceptable. Then find another aspect of your life and start over again. Enjoy the journey and you will find yourself at your destination sooner than you know.

Getting from "No" to "Know" Magically

Are things not going your way? Are there too many doors slamming shut and too many people telling you "No"? Then you need a little magic to help you get from "No" to "Know."

See if this helps. Whatever is happening right now is just the manifestation of your thoughts and feelings from the past. In other words, your current reality isn't the result of anything you are thinking and feeling now.

So if things are going all wrong right now, just chalk it up to negative thoughts and feelings you experienced in the past. It has nothing to do with now.

So what do you do? Well, here's some great advice from Abraham-Hicks:
"Never face reality unless your reality is just the way you want it to be."

In other words, if your current reality isn't all that you want it to be, then just ignore it. Blow it off. Magically, it's called the "art of selective attention." Don't bother doing the mature thing and facing your reality.

Instead, put your energies toward this little mantra, also from Abraham-Hicks:

"Today, no matter where I'm going, no matter what I am doing, and no matter who I'm doing it with -- it is my dominant intent to look for that which I'm wanting to see. I'm wanting to find thoughts and words and actions that feel good while I'm finding them. For in doing so, I am, in the moment, practicing the art of allowing all that I've been telling the Universe I'm wanting, for all of the days of my existence."

In short, when you see something you don't like, do the ostrich thing and ignore it. When you see something that lines up with what you want, give it your full attention. Love it, enjoy it, ham it up. You get the picture, right?

Get Magical Answers with a Question Circle

In these uncertain times people are actively seeking answers to problems ranging from job loss to foreclosure. If you need some magical guidance from powers and beings, a question circle may be just the ticket for you.

A question circle is a magical ritual where you ask for help and guidance from the winds of the four directions. It's a simple ritual and you only need a few tools which you can pick up at your local supermarket.

Here's what you'll need: a sun yellow candle on a plate or in glass, paper or wooden matches, pen, and paper. You may also need a compass to help you figure out the cardinal directions of east, south, west, and north.

How to Do a Magical Question Circle
Once you've gathered your materials and have located the cardinal directions, light your yellow candle with your matches. Then, follow the steps below.

1) Bring your candle, pen, and paper to the east quarter of your circle. Sit facing the outside of the circle (facing east). Ask the Winds of Knowledge what you need to know about your situation, and get quite inside as you wait for the answer. Be prepared to write down everything that comes to you. Don't think about it, just write. Keep writing until you no longer receive information. Thank the Winds of Knowledge and move to the next step.

2) Move to the south, and sit facing south. Ask the Winds of Power to show you what actions you need to take for your situation. Again, write any answers that come to you. Thank the Winds of Power.

3) Move to the next quarter, in the west, and sit facing west. Ask the Winds of Feeling what emotional shifts you need to make regarding your situation. In addition, you may want to ask for spiritual enlightenment. Thank the Winds of Feeling, and then move to the next quarter.

4) Move to the north, and sit facing north. Ask the Winds of Strength how you can build a foundation for the future you want. Ask for practical guidance about your situation. Thank the Winds of Strength.

5) Finally, move back to the center of your circle and sit facing east. Read through the answers that have come to you from each direction. Slowly digest the information. You may want to repeat the question circle several times, at different times, until you get clarity on your situation.

How Long Does Change Take?

How often have you started a new program of change in your life only to feel discouraged three days later that "nothing is happening"? Or maybe you actually stick with a new ritual or a new diet for a whole two weeks and you see some change … but it's not happening fast enough.

A Small Change Now is All It Takes
What do you do? Before you decide that everything really is hopeless, take a moment to look at the process of change with the help of this magical principle: "A small change in the present produces a larger change in the future." This is the basic principle we use in spellwork and it means that if you make even the tiniest change today you will see bigger change in about a week. And that bigger change will lead to an even bigger change in about two weeks. And so on.

So let's suppose you've started working with a new magical practice. Say you've decided to start meditating for 15 minutes each morning--nothing fancy, just sitting quietly and clearing your mind as much as possible. On the first morning of meditating you will probably notice an immediate change because your mind is quiet at a time when it normally is not. You're content that your new program of meditation is going to be useful and helpful. More importantly, a small and highly contagious molecule of change has been born.

Nothing Happening?
Now what happens a week after you start meditating? Maybe you've had a really hectic week and you feel tired and irritable. All of sudden it seems like the 15 minutes of meditation is too much--it takes too much time when so many other things are pressing on your time. It seems like nothing is happening, no change is occurring.

But "nothing's happening" hardly describes what is going on inside you. That highly contagious molecule of change that was born the day you began meditating has been busy reaching out and touching and transforming other molecules inside you. Now a greater percentage of your molecules than ever before has the quality of quiet that you create during your meditation. The more quiet you have inside you, the more you're able to listen to your inner intuitive voice, the better your work will be, the better your life will be … but it's still too small a percentage for you to notice.

It's Like the Penny Doubling
But if you stay with your new meditation practice that small sense of quiet will begin to spread. It's like the example of starting out with a penny and doubling it every day for 31 days. Here's what you get at the end of each week:

Day 1: $0.01
Day 7: $0.64
Day 14: $81.92
Day 21: $10,485.76
Day 28: $1,342,177.28
Day 31: $10,737,418.24

So at the end of the month you have over $10 million. The same is true with your new meditation practice but the key is how long it takes you notice. If you ever take the time to observe your life you will be amazed by how easily you are hypnotized by the incessant buzz and hum of daily activities. There's voice mail and email, gossip, your car running low on gas, the need to feed the cat, or all of your troubles at work. There are a million things that take up your attention while this small quiet molecule formed by your daily meditation goes around and changes you from the inside out.

Be Aware of Change
The difficulty lies in being aware of change. In the example with the penny doubling, it may take you 31 days--when you already have $10 million in your pocket--before you notice that something has shifted and life is different. But it's worth it, right? I'd say $10 million is worth it. So, as they say, don't give up on change five minutes before the miracle happens. Stick with whatever you've decided to do to change your life and prepare to be awestruck!

How to Train Your Body to Behave

Did you know that you are not your body? You are a Spirit and you "have" or "own" your body. It's yours. It's one of your tools. It is not you.

Have you ever noticed how your body doesn't always seem to obey your wishes? It's often tired or hungry or in pain just when you want to do something really exciting. It sometimes falls asleep during business meetings or after lunch. It often has a hard time waking up. It likes to eat more than is good for your waistline.

Talk to Your Body
But once you realize that you are not your body, you can start to train your body to behave in a way that works for you. All you have to do is talk to your body as if you were talking to another person.

For instance, suppose you're on a long distance driving trip and you notice that your body is starting to fall asleep. No problem. Just say, either out loud or in your mind, "Body wake up!" Say it forcefully. You're telling your body to stay alert, not asking it. You'll notice that you're body will immediately come to attention. You may have to repeat your command a few times to remind body to stay awake.

You can also teach body to develop stamina. Let's say you exercise on a treadmill. To train your body to develop stamina, just tell it what you want at the beginning of the workout. You might tell your body, "Run in a relaxed manner at the pace of the treadmill until I tell you to stop. Breathe easily." Your body will then run easily until you tell it to stop. If, however, you start thinking with your mind about how tired you feel or how much you hate the treadmill, your body will get tired. As long as you keep your mind neutral, your body will easily run for as long as you want.

Program Your Body
If you're interested in losing or gaining weight you can program your body to use food in a specific way. To lose weight, tell body when you want it to get hungry and how much you want it to eat. You can tell your body, "You will not be hungry until noon today." Before you start your meal, you can also tell your body, "Use this food for energy and stamina only. Release all excess calories after this meal and do not store them," or some similar statement.

The point is that your body can be programmed any number of ways to suit your desires and lifestyle. Don't get wrapped up in what your body does or doesn't do now. Focus your attention on training your body to do what you want it to do. As a Spirit with a mind and a body, you are in charge. So take charge and start giving orders!

Clockin' Time on Earth

Cell phones, pagers, day planners, guru seminars, life purpose workshops, self help videos, aura cleansing CDs … all of these ostensibly help us live happier, more directed, more productive lives on Earth. They are supposed to help us find our life direction, plot our course, and keep going until we get "there."

And it's all good … until it isn't. If you find that your absolutely nuts because you knew your life purpose but forgot it, or you know your life direction and don't want to go there, or you've cleansed your aura until you're absolutely clear (and empty), or your just plain confused, take a breather!

Other Alternatives for Clockin' Time on Earth
We live in such a driven society that sometimes we can drive ourselves right into depression or panic. When you feel just a little crazy about your life purpose or lack of it, check out some of these thoughts on life purpose from various sources:
  • We are here to sound a joyous note to Creator's ear (Hopi Indians).
  • We're required to be on Earth for a certain amount of time. What we do with that time is up to us. We have no pre-destined purpose to fulfill (anonymous).
  • Earth is a school and we've chosen our own curriculum (translation: life lessons). We have free will so we can change the curriculum any time we want-like now (Paxton Robey).
Hmmm … these sound like some relaxing alternatives to the "hurry and worry" approach to life purpose.

True Magical Creation - Leap Before You Look

"Until one is committed, there is hesitancy, the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness. Concerning all acts of initiative and creation, there is one elementary rule - the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans; that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too. All sorts of things occur to help one that would never otherwise have occurred. A whole stream of events issues from the decision, raising in one's favour all manner of unforeseen incidents and meetings and material assistance, which no man could have dreamed would have come his way. Whatever you can do or dream you can begin it. Boldness has genius, power, and magic in it. Begin it now." -- Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Goethe's quote above really sums up the difference between true magical creation, and false creation. You see, in this society, we've got a major part of the creation sequence backwards -- we are all afraid to commit to creating anything, and we base commitment on the wrong things.

Don't Be Afraid to Commit
How many times have you come upon an opportunity, but been afraid to commit because you didn't have "all the facts"? Well, guess what? By the time you gathered all the facts, the opportunity has either disappeared or you no longer felt like jumping in with both feet. In a society based around "insurance," we are taught to be cautious, to do good research and to gather all the facts. That's all well and good, but it means that we never create anything real -- and we never get to experience the magic in life.

In the creation sequence that is at the heart of magic (after all, what is a spell but a program to create something you want?), commitment comes from your desire, not from an assessment of the facts. Why? Because in this Universe the facts are quite irrelevant. In this Universe, literally anything and everything you want is possible. If you want something, the Universe will bring it to you. According to Emmett Fox, the Universe is "plastic" or bendable to our wishes. So the "facts" are irrelevant. If you want it, the Universe will give it to you.

For Real Magic, Leap Before You Look
So in the true creation sequence, the steps are "leap before you look." Looking doesn't do anything except slow you down, create doubt and hinder your desire. The so-called facts are only the result of other people's creations. They are irrelevant to your own creation. True creation is the result of feeling a rush of desire and saying "yes" to that desire -- regardless of what society or the facts tell you about the situation. True magical creation is uninhibited, free-flowing, wondrous desire.

So what happens when you stumble on an opportunity that you really want to say "yes" to but lack the resources to jump in? Practice saying "yes" to that opportunity internally. Whether you follow up on that opportunity or not, it's the "yes" part that matter. Leaping before you look takes practice, and saying "yes" allows you to flex that part of your psyche that's been dormant for so long.

The goal is to practice letting that desire flow. If you keep practicing flow, one day a huge desire will come up and grab your attention and you'll literally leap before you look -- and you'll create in a most spontaneous and unbelievable way. Have a wondrous time experimenting with this!

Ask Alan: Why Use Magical Tools?

We just got an email that raises an interesting question. The author of the email says, "We don't need any sticks or wands or anything. We have the powers in are hands just as well in are head."

This raises an interesting question:

Why use magical tools?


This is a great question, and the author of the email is right. Everyone possesses and can channel magical energy using their hands, directing the energy with their intention (head). In fact, most magicians learn to handle the four elemental energies-Air, Fire, Water, and Earth-bare-handed, without the benefit of tools. It is best when you are first starting out in magic to handle these energies directly, with your hands, and throughout your body. We call this hand magic, or the direct handling of elements.

Magical Tools Give You More Reach
However, as you advance your skills, the use of magical tools is important. Magical tools extend our "reach," since they can handle more energies than we can handle with our hands. This greater level of energy means that we can reach further with the elemental energies to accomplish more.

For instance, you can easily to put up a personal magical shield around your body using your hands. It is simple to summon and direct enough energy through your hands. However, if you wanted to shield a house or a large property, you can do it much more easily with a tool, like a Wand. With the use of a properly made and keyed Wand, you can easily shield a property that includes many acres. It's possible to do the same using just your hands, but the level of force is much greater. The Wand saves you quite a bit of exertion.

Each of the four magical elements has its own corresponding tool, as follows:

Air element = Wand
Fire element = Athame

Water element = Chalice

Earth element = Plate


By using magical tools, experienced practitioners can affect situations on many levels, ranging from the personal level to the global level.

Making Graceful Life Transitions

I recently was gifted with the experience of observing a friend go through a fairly major life transition that affected every member of her family. While this process is happening all the time to at least a certain population of the planet, what made this experience so special was experiencing the grace, intention, and determination with which she walked through this transition.

Because of the beauty of this experience I began reflecting that many of us face transitions and change with resistance (if not downright horror!), which causes the transitions to be choppy and filled with stops and starts rather than smooth and graceful. I then reflected on the many steps my friend took to ease the way for her transition, and how those steps were rituals that kept her path straight and narrow.

I’d like to share some of the rituals and remedies that she used to make her life transition a joyful one filled with gifts, along with a few of my own.

Flower Essences
Flower essences are generally taken 4 drops, 4 times as day. Rescue Remedy can be taken as often as needed.

  • Walnut: Excellent for all kinds of life transitions, clears old habit patterns, helps you find your direction free from the influence of others.
  • Cherry Plum: Trust in the intuitive guidance of life, also called the “letting go and letting God” essence
  • Rescue Remedy: A five flower essence created by Bach that helps in all traumatic and trying situations.

Colors

  • Sun Yellow: Burning a sun yellow candle for 30 minutes or more will nourish your spirit vitality and help you make clear, birth-vision oriented choices.
  • Sky Blue: Surrounding yourself with sky blue or wearing sky blue will connect you with spirit and free you from mind’s chatter.

Angels

  • Hire an Angel: There is an angel for everything you need. To hire an angel, just say, “I’d like to hire an angel specializing in [state your desire].” Wait a few seconds, then make your request, which might go something like this: “Angel of [your desire], I request your help in walking with me through this life transition so that I see all the gifts and beauty that are part of this process. Thank you in advance.” Then, at the end of the day or throughout the experience, thank your angel again. Appreciation is necessary in working with angels!

Rituals

  • Pendulum: If a particular life transition seems to be dragging on too long, you can spin a pendulum clockwise until it stops, with the intention that the pendulum is clearing any stagnant energies associated with the situations.
  • Walk in the Rain: Walking in the rain, especially by running water, helps to clear out old energies and bring fresh insights into a life transition. The running water carries away the old and the rain brings in the new!
